can someone briefly explain skimmers to me. have never really understood them!

Do you know at the beach, there may be foamy scum at the edges of the water, well, at higher salinitys(full marine conditions) the bubbles generated by something can attract organic matter, which would have been broken down by bacteria in the filter. This organic matter adhers to the bubbles created by the skimmer and once at the top, overflow into the cup, which is then emptied.

They should reduce nitrates/phosphates in the tank.

thanks

I have just ordered by 15kg of live rock from livingrock.co.uk :hyper: so that will be coming tuesday, i am going to need to put it in a container, with heat and flow until the nitrite has dissapeared(if there is die off), before adding it straight to the tank.

I have recieved some things too,

The new koralia evolution 900 is 98% the same as the old koralia for those who are intrested. I have now modified both my koralia's by cutting out a few of the plastics which has boosted by flow.

I have fitted a 15w t6 blue bulb to the back of my tank, and fitted a reflector onto it. Heres a picture also to show the difference in diameter of the t6 tubes.

You may of heard off my other thread that my levels are currently, nitrate: 10-25ppm and Phosphate 0.10-0.25ppm, so hopefully with the use of RO water and a phosphate remover(going to buy phosban) it should go down, and regarding nitrate, the live rock should lower that, converting the nitate into nitrogen by comleting the cycle..

thanks!

Adam

love it, Ads!

i wish i could have the time and inclination to do something like this. Soooooooo tempted to convert to S/W. I have even priced up to convert my Trigon!

 And leave me all alone in Planted?! Noooo! :shout:

Well, I will say this, since I live in Miami, FL, the temptation to go Marine has always been strong and I will lurk here on occasion to live vicariously through the amazing journals that I see here. I do have my favorites at TFF. I especially love it when I recognize a species being kept as a Florida or Caribbean native. That is neat. The salty mods better watch out. :shifty: It is actually easier to keep Marine in Miami than to keep Planted. The equipment is much easier to find and the water quality is actually more condusive for Marine. :hey:

This looks like a nice conversion, Adam. I look forward to tracking its progress.

llj :)

No you dont mate, if there was any die off, this will cause an ammonia spike. which will then feed the miltiplying bacteria in the rock. like fishless cycling a fresh water tank, but you dont have to add the ammonia cos it does it itself.

ok mate, thought so. just out of intrest, what will the die off be caused from? bacteria dying or the creatures on the rock? and also, regarding the creatures, im not going to know really if there is a mantis shrimp am i? so shall i do the thing with the glass and bacon and see if i can catch it somehow(if there is even one in there)

If there is a mantis it will be World war 3, becuase when the puffer sees it he will go for it, and then most likely, from what ive heard about mantis' it will kill the puffer.

do i add light over the bucket at any point during the cycle?

thanks

where are you buying the rock from? how long will it be out of water?

chances of a mantis is quite small...especially getting a large one big enough to kill your puffer.

the die off is caused just by the rock drying out a bit, so its a mixture of bacteria and little creepy crawlies.

the light would be handy if its going to be a while, ie out of water a long while as the cycle will take longer and the rock will keep a better colour if lit

Im buying it from Calico aquatics(livingrock.co.uk) and its next day before 4pm, so, a total of less than 24 hours out of water.

thanks

dont know exactly. i assume they will send it damp - ive always bought rock that i pick up. If its not out of water for much longer than 30-60 mins you hardly see anything. that long id expect a couple of weeks.
