a lot of us "rescue" bettas

ah! Bless... I'm liking this thread. Well I'm kinda a 2nd generation rescuer too... My mum worked at an animal shelter when I was a kid so we had a massive variety of feral cats and kittens we used to (try) to tame and those that were fully tamed were adopted out, the others we kept. I'm just gonna tell the faorite ones stories!! ;)

I was allowed to keep Magic (cat) for my 6th birthday. He was the only survivor of 5 feral kittens and I fell in love with him. I left him with mum and dad whilst I moved around and only recently had him move in with me again.

Del boy (another cat) had cancer but no home so he lived with me for a year till he was pts. I had a house rabbit (fluffy) for a year too, till be made a bid for freedom and never came home!

My small fish tank is a rescue in itself as a friend had inherited it and hated it so never cleaned it, I used to go to her house to sort it out and finally she was moving and was gonna leave it in the flat so I took it and they are much happier here.

There is my rescue bettta, big red who was all beaten up and finless but is doing well, and I am about to rescue another blue betta from the same place :(

Finally, there is my kitten, Gizmo, who was found in a bin bag with 4 other dead kittens on the main road near me. My friend found him and called me. I took him to the vets, we nursed him back to health and I couldnt bear to part with him.

Thats it really....for now

Only really our rabbit from the RSPCA shelter. Poor girl- they usually pair up the rabbits, but she was too aggressive (I prefer grumpy )) to go with another rabbit. She was found as a stray. She must have been in the shelter for months- on her vaccination certificate ot says June 04, and we didn't get her until September/October time. Here she is, she's a New Zealand White (you can mainly tell by the short ears and how big she is).

Once I move out next year and am in a town where I can actually find a job that doesn't involve flipping burgers, I just know I'll end up saving God only knows how many animals. I'm a real bleeding heart sometimes

Fish aside, I only take animals into my home that I feel I have a "connection" with. My kitty Circe came from the local animal shelter. I was going to adopt an adult cat, but cats were in short supply (luckily for them, since the shelter wasn't no-kill) and she just stole my heart . She was really shy, unfriendly, had ear mites, and was not the youngest kitten of the bunch at 4 months, so she was a pretty unlikely candidate for adoption. My last cat (who mysteriously disappeared :( ) was found in the back of an employee's truck at the sheet metal shop my parents own as a teeny tiny kitten who really shouldn't have even been weaned yet, but he survived.

Once I move out, I plan to foster injured cats and kittens that would normally be euthanized at animal shelters and pay for any medical attention they might need before adopting them out to wonderful new homes :). I figure that I can help many more animals this way in the long run than by trying to give them all a home myself (I can only care for so many animals at a time.)

Edited to add a picture of my sweet fluffy baby

I've been "rescuing" animals for too many years to count now. I was always dragging home the stray dogs and cats in the neighborhood, also sparrows, robins, a turkey once (yes, a turkey) turtles, rabbits and whatever else you can think of. I can't possibly list them all here or even remember them all for that matter, so I will just list the ones we've had in the last 5 years or so.

Snoopy, dog - chow mix (daughter named him, looks nothing like THE Snoopy.) Found at approximately 10 weeks old in the housing projects with kids throwing rocks at him. Hubby and daughter saw him and daughter begged to stop and get him. Hubby agreed as long as they would take him straight to the Humane Society the next morning. That was in 1995. They haven't made it to the Humane Society with him yet. ;)

Jynx - Persian cat - my baby - Hubby and I were at odds about a new pet. I wanted a small house dog, he would only agree to a cat. Co-worker told me about Jynx. She had been adopted through the Humane Society to a family with small children. She hated the toddlers and would hiss and try to scratch them. The owner gave her to my co-worker's daughter, who also had a small child. The co-worker's daughter didn't really want her, but loved cats and didn't want her to go back to the HS. However, she worked full time and her mother took care of the baby, so there was no one at home with Jynx for about 10 months and she became almost like a feral cat. We went to see her and Hubby fell in love with her. Since our kids are both grown, we agreed to take her. Got her in the car in the carrier in the backseat on the way home and she started to howl. Hubby turned around to check on her and she reached through the cage and scratched his arm through his jacket. Wonder why she was so hard to place? She hid in the closet for about two months. After we had her about four months she let us pet her. Now we have had her for 10 years and she is about as spoiled and pampered as you can get. She loves to be petted, but hates to be held. She has learned to tolerate it since there have been times it has been necessary to hold her, but she doesn't like it a little bit.

Cysco - dilute mix cat - belonged to an elderly neighbor that had three cats and a dog. Daughter placed her in a nursing facility that would accept one cat. The other two cats and dog were abandoned to fend for themselves. The dog was hit by a car the first day he was loose. My daughter was able to catch one of the cats and gave it to her cousin who still has her. The other cat was too clever for us to catch. Daughter started taking food over to her (she was staying at her former home in the back yard) and then gradually coaxing her closer and closer to our house until one morning she went out the front door and Cysco was sitting on the front steps waiting for breakfast. She has been with us for 7 years now. She is still an outdoor cat by her own choosing, but we have a tiny dog house set up for her and when weather permits we leave the door open to the back porch and she likes to come in there to get out of the heat. She is a sweet little girl.

Simon - Silky Terrier - Simon started out as my son's dog, but my father fell in love with him and we gave him to my dad. Dad had him for almost 13 years when he (Dad) died. Simon came to live with us then. We had him for another 4 years before we had him put to sleep. He'd had a stroke and gone blind, and partially deaf. He could barely walk and you could tell he didn't really know where he was anymore. It broke my heart, but it was best for him.

Buddy - Mixed dog - Buddy belonged to a friend of mine who died of cancer in 2001. He asked me to take Buddy and keep him until I was sure I could find a good home for him. It took two years to find the right home, but he now lives with a coworker and I have visitation rights. She even brings me pictures of him.
