A friend brought home coral from Hawaii...

I have a friend who was recently in Hawaii and was scuba diving. He brought back a piece of coral from the reef and asked if I had any use for it in my tank... I told him no (I don't have the appropriate lighting at this time). He had properly packaged it and everything... but now a month has passed and the coral is dead. Can I use this as decoration in my tank? I wouldn't benefit or be hurt from this, would I?

Just rinse it off and make sure there is no dead skin hanging off oft it. I assume that it is an sps coral?
