45 Gallon Reef Diary Year Two

Thanks sparkle :). Your tank can and will look as good. Its really just a matter of patience and love for the animals :D

Looking good Ski :good:

On the cooling issues, I went for one of these thermostic power switches - works really well, can leave the tank to it's own devices now, no need for any timer on the fans.

Cooler Thermostat

What became of the sea hare you employed in the algae wars Ski - is he still about, do you need to feed him now your 'in the clear'?

I've been in the clear since the end of the great algal wars. General Eisenhart was honorably discharged and re-depoloyed in an allied theatre as I did not feel like paying his required algae wages . His new owner loves him though :D

Hmm...

May be looking to 'rent' a sea hare myself in a little while then.

Could be something in this...

lol how about rent my tank, it has no algae if that was only possible.

Interesting way to keep the tank cool, I think if that happened for me my parents would kill me having to do all that. Have you ever considered putting it in your basement or do you not have one?

Everybody in Buffalo has a basement. Too bad my particular basement is a dreary storage area... I was considering doing a basement sump, but didnt want to bother ripping up drywall

A new Admiral will soon be introduced into the fleet. Today at approximately 1900 hours a selection of officers landed and was brought to a nearby barracks. Command went to visit the new arrivals as they ended their long journey all the way from the islands of Vanuatu. A new admiral has been chosen yet not returned to the theatre for duty just yet as Reef Command is on shore leave this weekend. The new acquisition awaits his new assignment in his temporary barracks. He will be introduced in due time but for now, enjoy some information about his relatives :good:

Well, I sadly can't get a decent shot of the Labouti Wrasse, he won't settle down and stay still long enough for my camera to focus... He's a spunky little guy. So instead I figured I'd just update with some general pictures and a shot of my newest frag anyways :)

First up, I must be feeding Lieutenant Piws steriods or something cause his growth has exploded and he's really active around the tank now. No longer shy :). He's in the foreground here and thus his size is a little decieving, but a gorgeous fish for sure.

Next, my newest coral frag. Some of my canadian brothers may recognize this frag as I hear its somewhat popular up there, but I rarely see it in the states. Sold as just "blue clove polyps". A really fast grower and gorgeous to boot.

And finally, a full tank shot. Here you'll all notice the addition of a bunch of LR on the right hand side. This is in preparation for the 65 if I ever do get around to upgrading to it. Such a painfully slow upgrade process. And before everyone asks, the torch is there, behind the pillar on the right... It was eating at the time and closed up, hidden behind the rock :)

What lighting is that champ? 20K? Thats some serious Blueness! Nice fish and coral though. That Blue CLove Polyp is very interesting! What kind of coral is it? Looks like either some kind of Goni or a Sacro!

Its a Hamilton 14,000K halide. From all the research I've done it seems to be a good combo between the color of a 20k but still giving good PAR like a 10k. The camera actually makes it look a little bluer than it is in real life, not a perfect color balance :)

The clove polyp is clearly a soft colony-type polyp, most resembling GSP if you ask me. It spreads out in a mat fashion and is growing REALLY fast in my tank. Its doubled in size in about 3 weeks
