Just got my first fish tank and wanted some ideas of what to keep, only problem is the tank is only 21 litres so im know i'm pretty limited on what I can keep, i was thinking of a puffer fish, what do you guys suggest?

you could keep a single dwarf puffer in there if you wanted

some other options are in the thread 'fish for a 10gal tank' in my sig

your tanks 6gals so you need to bear in mind not all the suggestions there will be appropriate but most of them will.

In a tank that size, I might keep 3 or 4 female bettas.... very pretty, a variety of colors and styles available. And they all get along. Just don't get less than 3. ;)

for me that tanks too small for a sorority of bettas

15gal min IMO and 6 females at a min. the mroe you have the less aggression issues there will be

THanks for the help just had a look at the ten gallon fish, the shell-dwelling cichlids look really intersting how easy is it to care for these and are they easily available throughout england?

shellies are lovely

reasonably readily available, you won't find them everywhere but they're not rare or anything.

have a look in the fish species index for some more care info, or just google them and see what comes up

just had a quick look in the species index, do they have any special needs or anything and do you think theyre suitable for a beginner, also what tankmates would be suitable in a 6 gallon tank?

no tankmates, it needs to be a species tank with a little group of them.

you'd most likely need to bring your ph up with some tuffa rock or coral sand but of course that depends on what your pH is now!

make sure you feed appropriately as well, can't comment on that specific species but most african cichlids need veggies in their diet so you've to make sure you get the right food.

but once the pH is adjusted it should stay stable and likewise once you've got the right food it's no hassle to give them it. so i think it's just a case of research and a little careful preparation then maintenance should be a doddle

However shellies are special: Omnivorous: And they love shrimp pellets, brine shimp(you should see them stalk), daphnia, not to mention the odd algal wafer or spirulana.

The are the most interesting small fish ive ever seen, loads of character.

fair enough, as with any fish just check the requirements and make sure you do it!

they are fantastic fish though, i'd love some

I would put in a male betta and some african dwarf frogs (thats what im gonna do with my 21 litre!)

Probably best to find out the local parameters first, that way you won't waste money on anything not suited to your local water.
