Just read through you entire journal from start to finish and its got me wanting to set up my very own SH tank. Looking really good :)

I know SH can be quite demanding to look after but I would appreciated it if you could quickly just run through your routine for feeding and tank maintainance etc please, including how often you feed per day and what foods other than mysis (if any) you use and how much of your time the SH's actually take up. Also how often do you carry out water changes etc. And finally what is your water temp set at?

Sorry about all the q's but due to seriously considering setting up a SH tank I want to know what I may be letting myself in for.

Thank you and keep up the good work :)

Sorry it has taken me sooooo long to reply the last few weeks have been very hetic.

I feed my SH 3 times a day - on a mixture mysis and enriched brine ( i add liposome vits to the food twice a week) i feed them before work about 7:30 ish, in the afternoon about 5 and the evening about 9. Each feed takes about 1/2 hour to do. Then about 1 a month i buy some live river shrimp and put in the tank to replace a feed. I don't do this too often as i do not want them to stop eating frozen - it gives them a bit fun hunting and something different to eat.

My maintaince is a 25-27L water change weekly (130l tank) i do this much because of the amount of food i have too feed - and how quickly the tank gets dirty. Asweel as the water change i have to cut back the algae, clean out sponges and pumps. In all probally takes 1-2 hours, i imagine it will take even longer once i have my op.

My tank temp is 24 oC which is fine in the winter the heater keeps it that temp, but in the summer i have to run a chiller unit to keep it a constant temp (which is not cheap). I keep my sg at 1.023.

To start with it can seem very time consuming and difficult but once you have worked out your routine it's not too bad, the only real difference really between my SH and the reef tank is the feeding - maintaince and general upkeep it about the same.

Hope this helps and more q's please feel free to ask and i'll try my best to answer quicker next time

Thanks for the reply Kelwoo, dont worry about it having been awhile as I'm taking things nice and slow as it is, as dont wish to be rushing into anything. and the fact you took time out to reply with a lot of valuable info that has come of good use is highly appreciated.

Now back to doing more research...

If I have any more q's (which I am sure I will have) I will be getting in contact.

But until then... keep up the good work :good:

Hi guys, sorry it's been soooo long.

This is going to be a very quick post as it's late and i've got to get up early for work. Just wanted to share my exciting news - I have a SH baby, thats right just one found (but SH can give birth after a few days releasing a few and then all of them) so i am expecting some more.

I think it is from the two newbies - Spike and Drew.

Here are some pics
