130l Seahorse Setup

What a fantastic thread and tanks! I am in awe! B-)

If you don't mind me asking, what is the green algae? I really like that and would like it for one of my tanks :D

Thanks jenny, the green almost seaweed looking algae is caulerpa prolifera which i purchased on ebay - not too expensive but i have never seen it for sale in the local fish shops. If you would like some next time i'm doing a bit of a tidy up and a prune if you pm me your address i will send you some, or if you live close to us you can always pop round to pick it up. (langley spitting distance from heathrow airport.)

Kelwoo

Oh thank you very much! :D
A pm is on it's way!

The tank loooks superb! I really love the feel of it and I hope that soon enough you'll have babies all over :D

Wow, I love that frogspawn, looks awesome :)

If you want that duncan nice and full and huge and gorgeous looking, spot feed it 3-4 times a week with brine/mysis/whatever frozen you have. They grow like lightning when you spot feed em

Thank you everyone, to get such fab comments is great, so thank you.

Jenny thanks for PM, will let you know when i sent it, probably next week now. I would love some red grape, that would be great :good: :hyper: . I'll put my address in with the algae when i post it.

Bae, I think i'm along way off raising the babies, having the babies at the moment seems to be an issue and that's supposed to be the easy part. From the research i have done and reading about other SH breeders experiences getting them to survive the week is difficult and if i manage that getting them to that point getting them survive to 7 weeks and old enough to sell is even more difficult. But i'm up for the challange. I have no idea at this point how much i would sell them for if i get them to survive, but i will let you know when we're at that point and if your still interested we'll sort it out then.

YF SH are fancinating animals to keep and i'm so glad i bit the bullet and did it. However they are a lot more work then a reef tank (but well worth it IMO), but as bagu said as long as you do the research (lots of research) and have the time, money and energy to give them there is no reason not to if you decide to keep SH you won't be disappointed.

Thanks Ski, the frogspawn was a gem of a find - we just went to the LFS to have a look around for something to do and get out of the house and there it was. It's doulbed in size since we brought him.

As for the duncan we have tried numerous time to spot feed it and it doesn't seem interest it closes up before we even get near it. It's there a trick to it we haven't learnt? how do you feed yours?

I have got some photos of toady 2 which i will post later.

Thanks again for all your great comments.

Kelwoo

P.S what do you guys think of the fake rock?

Kelwoo to feed my Duncan, I feed him first. I squirt some food at the fish to keep them out of the way, if you are quick enough you can then get some squirted at the tentacles before they close. As long as the food is captured by the tentacles, they will pass it to the mouth. A bit like most corals really.

My frogspawn loves mysis, but I put some granule in with it to feed the fish (am trying to get Bangaii to take some) the frogspawn will take the mysis and anything else mixed in but spit out the granule, which the clowns then usually get to first.

Good Luck with that.

So as promised here are a few more pics.

First a pic of the bubble in the nano.

This is my new toadstool, which wasn't open when i last took some photos. It doesn't really show how green his tips are but it is the best picture i could get.
(or should i say Chris could get)

And finally a couple of vids. The first was inspired by Tina and her lovely mandarin pics. Unfortunately Merlin will not stay still enough for a picture but managed to get a vid of him when it was feeding time.

Last and by no means least a vid of Storm (my baby girl) chowing down.

Hope you enjoy

Nice pictures, my one bubble is supposed to look like that.

I love that Mandarin feeding. Is it some airline on the end of a syringe you are using to feed??

Seahorse is so sweet. I am so tempted by seahorses.

Thanks, and I'm glad you like the vids. I have one of the SH's dancing but I have to edit it first as it's 20mins long.

Tina to feed the mandarin and the SH I use a jumbo pastette with air line attached on the end. It gives me the reach I need but also the flexability to get behind stuff and reach everyone.

Its good, I have been using a syringe with airline attached over the last few days and have been using a glass jar as a feeding Diner for the Mandarin. He has not used the Diner yet although he has got to the edge of it tonight and taken what was right on the edge. Its easier to get the pods down to him with the syringe and airline too.

If I can get hold of some larger pastettes, I will try those and see how they compare to the syringe. As soon as I saw the airline in the pic, I knew it was a good idea, the Mandarin is far less skittish of the airline than my hand, so anything that helps will be tried. I do want to persist with the same methods though, if he recognises a routine, he will be far more likely to adapt.

I would like to get some more dried food to in with the rest I am feeding him. I want him as fat as possible so anything will help. Brine, Mysis, Pods, Rotifers and some dried should make him fat, fingers crossed.

Thanks Kelwoo.

Just fully read through your journal for the first time. Great job, tank looks brilliant.

Me and Lyn are in the planning stages of setting up a seahorse tank at the moment for either a pair of Reidi or a pair of Barbs (or maybe Hippocampus comes as they are slightly more active).

Have you got any really good sites you would recommend for information?

Yes if you put a sump on it and are prepared to possibly upgrade to a larger tank. They also take a LOT more work then most marine tanks and are extremely sensitive to water conditions and temperature. Not to mention that they require feeding at least 3 times a day and some need to be target fed.
