12L Micro Tank

Have had nitrates building up quite quickly and doing water changes every other day. That might be my fault as I suspect overfeeding is the cause since removing the snail didn't make any difference. Also the temperature is hard to keep stable in the micro tank so I've decided to upgrade the shrimp tank.
Got a plastic 19L starter tank from PAH (all I've got room for!) It's a couple of inches bigger in each direction and about 50% increase on the micro.
Going to add black micro-gravel (sized in between sand and normal gravel) and start off with a minimally decorated tank mainly so I can see what they're up to.
Not sure whether to start a new thread or just carry on here so for now here's a photo of the new one just running with water to check for leaks.
Have cobbled together a hanging glass thermometer - the rubber had perished so fastened it to a sucker with a rubber band for now. Temp started off at 18⁰ and it's up to 19 after an hour and a half.

Will eventually transfer all the equipment over so won't be doing a fishless cycle or anything. Then I'll see if I can find more than 1 shrimp to transfer!

In case anyone is still following this thread I transferred the filter and the sole surviving shrimp to the 19L. I checked the gravel for bodies, but there were none. A shrimp breeder has suggested that they died and were eaten and they should ideally have a TDS of around 250 ppm to be able to moult properly. So maybe \i've got my answer about where they went and why!

The 12L now is a refuge for plants that need a bit of TLC as there is no livestock to be affected by fertilisers and liquid CO2.

sorry what is TDS and I've followed your new thread, btw i know u PMed me gona reply to that tomo when  i get the chance :p sorry for the delay

TDS refers to the minerals, salts, cations and anions dissolved in the water  basically anything besides water and suspended solids and gives an indication of the water hardness - the higher the number the harder the water.
This link explains how TDS meters work http://www.ozelink.com/tds_meters/tds_meters.htm
My solitary shrimp has moulted overnight but in saying that I don't know how difficult it was to achieve!
