I've been reading up on scaping Cichlid tanks and have learned that you need to put the rocks in first and place sand around them so if a fish digs under they won't drop and crack the glass, but my question is what do you use as a base layer? Anything that doesn't rot I presume?

My Aquamanta EFX did the same when I first set it up. If you have a lot of sponge as media or the cotton wool type stuff it takes a while for all the air to be dislodged. It will clear up after a while. Mine did anyway.
