I hadn't seen that no, was exercising my artistic licence!

After refusing to pay £12 for one on eBay, a trip to Sainsburys found me one for 69p!

I'm going to make 2 out of it, one with a java moss covering, the other is going to have flame moss..

Just trying to cut the 'door' with a Stanley knife while attempting to keep both thumbs.

  Nice job!

To validate your work, you must show us pics when it's done!

I set up a worm tank to harvest more worms since my LFS shut down.

Thats cool doing your own coconut caves!

I bought mine from LFS and has Anubias tied on it, my RCS love going inside it

I wouldn't use a Stanley knife, I cut clean through my thumb whilst trying to cut something once that really deserved something a bit more suitable!!!!!

Can't you cut the verticals with the saw and then smack the bit you want removed with a hammer insead? A lot safer!!!!

Stanley knife wouldn't even touch it, no workbench to clamp it in to use the saw again, I had to think of something else.

Used some 60grit emery paper over a section of broom handle at first, but decided that the opening wasn't quite big enough, so upgraded the broom handle to a roll of cling film!

I can assure you the outer casing of a coconut is an extremely resilient beast..

Alas, finished the entrance to one last night and began on the second.

The completed one will have java moss attached and be going in a tank for a dwarf puffer, the second will be covered in flame moss and going in the main community tank, hopefully my blue rams will appreciate all the hard work and potential loss of digits!

really good job, i brought mine from someone of this forum and my fish love them

I'm definitely going to try this now. It does seem silly paying so much for the caves when you can buy a coconut at any supermarket. Having said that, I guess thumbs are pretty priceless.

Your fish are very lucky. I hope they appreciate the hard work.

Do the caves need the height?  I would have thought that a simpler method of making them might be to cut the coconut length ways and then saw off the pointed end to make the entrance but I could be entirely wrong.

I'm totally impressed at your persistance with the clingfilm and sandpaper method though!

Possibly not, and that would be far easier, guess that all depends entirely on how you would like it to look!

Just incase anyone else wants to try,

Hopefully be finished soon and can attach moss, hoping to be able to show you the finished article by the end of tonight :)

:good:

Good job!

My three coconuts are still waiting for hubby to bring the tools back from the farm :(

So.... :D

The finished articles, what I used and what I'm about to do!

Liking that, especially the beer...........

One question though, is that glue safe for tanks?
Will it leach anything to the water?

If its ok, then good job, just check to be sure about that glue.

And the java moss one inside the dwarf puffers tank, it's still cycling and will have a 100% water change before the fish goes in.

It's still only a week in, so anything that does potentially cause a problem, will have happened and then be cleared out.

Still expecting another 4 weeks at least til it's cycled :(

The one with flame moss on, I think, is going to look great in the community tank, I can't wait to put it in to be honest, but going to leave this one over night for the superglue to fully cure. Have to do abit of a rescape where it's going to go too, so no pictures of that in tonight I'm afraid :(

However, hope he enjoys it when he finally arrives :D

I've googled a lot about it and the general consensus is that it's absolutely fine when cured!

Do so at your own risk I guess but I'm confident it will be fine.

There seems to be a lot of people using superglue to attach java ferns on in a very similar fashion to driftwood/pebbles.

EDIT: Just been confirmed by the very knowledgable chaps in the chat room, superglue cures instantly in water and is 100% safe if it's the gel variety. Happy days :)
