Hi:) I have also been thinking of doing a tank with no substrate, I'm pretty sure all the bacteria you need will live in your filter media. Even though some may live in the substrate I would think no matter what, as you add fish your colony in the filter will grow to accommodate your stock.

If I were you I would try to find a really cool betta. Not many fish can live comfortably in a 10 gallon, I'm afraid. You could probably do a small shoal of micro rasboras or something that stays super small.

I have noticed white spots on mine before like that. They would just go away though. My thought is they can change their pigment, I put mine in a white bowl while acclimizing one time and he turned white! I'm sure someone else has some other thoughts, just wanted to give my 2 cents.

I've heard kribs are easy too, just very protective/ aggressive as well.

I know it takes awhile for new parents to get it right but I haven't had personal experience with it. I really want to say beautiful fish! One of the most attractive severums I've ever seen.

They get air trapped in their shell and float sometimes. Try holding it by the glass so it can reattach or leave it alone, he'll figure it out! You'll know if their dead as their body will be completely out of the shell.

Sounds like a golden algae eater. The will suck the slime coat off of other fish. Try adding vegetables and algae wafers. I had to regime mine because this doesn't always work!

I thought about it but I'm towards the end of my stocking. I have 7 corys and a rope fish already as bottom dwellers, oh and 7 Kuhli loaches:/

I had to split my pair up cause they fought so bad, and then eventually get rid of them because apart they would still bully the rest of the fish.

Its definitely because they are both males, the only thing you can do is separate them for good. I had the same exact problem. Try to find another fish store that would take him or try to find another tank.
