Got a phonecall today whilst at work from the girlfriend telling me she has found our male Betta Fred dead at the top of the tank :( He gave no sign of any illness and the water levels are right, no matter what caused it we will miss the guy! R.I.P Fred

What should I look out for? All levels are fine, temp is fine, feeding is scheduled. Goons is bulging just near her egg spot, could she be carrying eggs?

Whatever you do id recommend a water-less cycle :P Yep lame jokes, then again its pushing on for 3am here lol

A proper cycle is the only real safe option. Impatience at this stage will almost certainly result in losses of fish. I hope you choose to do the right thing!

Due to what you have said it sounds to me as though the pet shop you got him from is a disaster waiting to happen. The water does need tempering, bettas don't do so well below 78f, 1 gallon really isn't enough water at all and to have an active current in a 1g tank isn't gonna help him either...

All seems pretty good so far, they both seem happy enough in there, so far a successful introduction!

Haha, that's probably a much better idea in the long run! Bettas are fantastic fish to keep but they are so bloody tempremental! Lol

Our betta tank is 48ltr or around 10g. I think that with the tank size you have it would be a risky introduction, he will have established his territory now. It isn't unworkable but not something I would advise.

Currently introducing 2 dwarf frogs to the fighting fish tank (48ltr). I'll keep you posted on how the introduction goes! Currently tempering the bag they came in.

Oh I agree completely there pal, I just didn't agree with the statement is all.

You can keep females with a male if the conditions are right and properly supervised to.ensure the introduction and following months go without trouble. However with the size of tank you have, that would be unfair on the fish. If its bettas you want, i would recommend getting a single male...

The chances are that the nitrate will still be above average even after the change, given a while, a few regular water changes and assuming you don't over feed it will go back down again.

That is probably a good thing to try, if dirt is collected in the sand then gets circle around the tank I guess it would have that effect. Give it a try and let me know how it goes :)

Is your filter working correctly? Left over food can be a huge contributing factor, as long as the tank is properly filtered and all uneaten food removed there should be no other reason for.the water to be dirty.
