I am considering stripping my 200 litre tank down cleaning it and adding a plant substrate   I have 2 questions   (1) Which is the best substrate and reasonably priced   (2) Is it possible to put sand on top of substrate as i have Panda Cories   Any help will be appreciated

In my opinion the bigger the tank the better but it is all down to personal choice

I am using an Eheim 2073 to filter my 200 litre tank.....pricey but a quality filter

My Cardinal tetras, harlequins and cherry barbs will always interact with any one in my family when they think it is feeding time, all swimming to one end of the tank looking to be fed!!!!

I think i paid £2.00 for 10 litres of RO water with the minerals in   I have only gone down the route of RO water for my nano shrimp tank but will not go down that route for my 200l lol

I am using RO water in my 22 litre nano tank due to high PH in my tap water   I buy my RO water from my LFS with minerals already added   I have had my cherry shrimps 2 weeks now and are settled and very lively

I had a similar thing happen   I started with 3 assassin's and ended up with 20   I am now back down to 5 as the smallest snails disappeared and i am assuming were eaten

Thanks for that ShinySideUp   I already added some more ammonia yesterday and it has dropped down to zero   This was the first time i have done an ammonia cycle so was getting confused with the results   I will change the water and then sort out my order for my cherry shrimp

It is tap water with black sand. In the tank is a piece of bog wood and java fern and moss

I am on day 30 of cycling my 22 litre Nano tank and the test readings are:   Ammonia   0ppm   Nitrite         0ppm   Nitrate       160ppm   The nitrate might be higher but the scale on my API test kit stops at 160ppm   Is this a normal reading when cycling tanks?

Eheim are definately quality filters

Finally bought myself an Aquanano 30, reduced from £74 to £52   Going for black sand, my other half thinks it will look better   If she is finally taking notice in me getting ready to set up a tank, i will agree with her lol
