    Starving Discus

Thanks for the replies guys! I'll check for signs of Hexamita, as he did perk up once I started with the 'Kusuri' med. It says on the packaging that it requires a second dose to deal with hexamita though, so I might try that. Perhaps it's not blindess that he's got, but rather dopeyness.

    Starving Discus

I'm having some issues with a discus I bought a few weeks ago. He was in my main tank with my other 4 discus, but I noticed his behaviour was strange. 1. He wasnt eating, and was dark coloured and hiding 2. Its almost as if he is blind. Sometimes he came out with the others, but would be facing...

    Discus Spitting Out Food

Hi Having trouble with one of my discus, he's spitting out his food. Trouble is, it's not constant, so I'm having trouble telling if it's something wrong with him, or him just being fussy? He'll spit out meaty food, like turkey heart. But he'll keep down other foods like bloodworm, brineshrimp...

What's The Biggest Mistake You've Ever Made In The Aquarium Ho

    1. Buying a BiOrb aquarium. It is now on the scrapheap 2. Buying some new fish and introducing Ich 3. Leaving the aquarium lid open and 5 of my Amano shrimp going walkabout 4. Leaving the aquarium lid open and 1 of my Amano shrimp freaking my wife out in the shower. Actually, no.4 is...

Going On Holiday- New Fish Tank Worries!

If no-one is doing any water changes for you, how about buying one of those products that absorb ammonia/nitrite/nitrates. Not sure of the name, perhaps zeolite, or nitra-zorb, Prime, or something along those lines. It might tie you over while you're away, but you'd probably have to re-do the...

    Cycling Tnak With Platys

Hard to say if those nitrates were left over from the previous water. You really need to test the water to see where your ammonia/nitrites are. Maybe take a water sample to a pet shop and ask them to test it for you... Not much you can do. If the water cycle is broken, it will need to restart...

    New Glow Fish (Controversial)

Wake up sheeple! Zombie bomb carrying glowfish with hitler moustaches are being developed as we speak! I for one welcome our new zombie glowfish overlords :)

    New Glow Fish (Controversial)

Yeah, I was only talking about a worst-case scenario there. At the moment it's just superficial changes that shouldnt do any harm.

    New Glow Fish (Controversial)

I would just be careful that such a fish could accidently escape into the wild and cause havoc. For example, if a fish is genetically altered to be hardier, or more aggressive, or breed more, it could effectively wipe out natural fish in the wild by out-competing them, or breeding like mad, or...

    Neon Tetra Turning White

Hopefully it's not "neon tetra disease", where they lose their colour as well. It's incurable. Symptoms: Restlessness Fish begins to lose coloration As cysts develop, body may become lumpy Fish has difficulty swimming It affects muscle tissue, which begins to turn white, generally starting...

    Neons Keep On Getting Fungus

I have about 10 neons that keep on getting fungus infections on their body. They seem to have it yet AGAIN. I have a community tank with various other fish (platys, molly, ancistrus, loach, betta) who seem healthy and dont show any signs of fungus. My water stats are fine: Ammonia - 0, Nitrite - 0...

Treating Ich In This Community Tank

By 'floaters', you mean dead fish? The 'rage' could be irritation caused by the ich annoying the fish. You have quite a mix of fish/shrimp there. I would recommend esHa 2000, I used it on some ich and it seemed to have worked ok. It doesn't seem to contain copper, but it does have malachite...

    Dwarf Gourami And A Molly

Some Dwarf Gouramis can be territorial. It could that it took him a few days to get used to his surroundings and establish his terrotory, now he's defending it. If your water stats are ok, and the Molly doesnt show any signs of sickness, it might be worth introducing a few others, so that the...

    Mass Death And Cloudy Water

It could be, yes. It could mean your tank has crashed due to the cleanout. Although with it happening overnight and the deaths, it could be some toxins your background has introduced into the water. Is your PH high? How long did you let the pond sealant cure?

My Fish Have White Spot And I Cant Get Rid Of It

Ich is only affected by the medicine when it's in it's free-swimming stage of it's life cycle. While it's in the cysts on the fish it's pretty much immune to your treatment. Raising the temp of your water speeds up the ich's lifecycle, so you can get it to the free swimming stage. This could...

    Bamboo Shrimp Skin

Yep, it's a good thing! It means they're getting enough food. Usually if they're well fed they can shed once a month, if they're getting less food they would shed less frequently. Once they've shed they are very vulnerable while their new skin is hardening. They'll be a sorta grey colour for a...

    Betta Fish In Trouble!

Hi It could be that the diet of freeze-dried bloodworm has ruined his digestive tract. It's pretty harsh, and it blocks them up and constipates them. This could be the accumulation of all that. If he's swimming like that it sounds like he's in discomfort or maybe pain. Perhaps try frozen fresh...

    Plant-Safe Ich Meds?

That's a tough one, no matter what you use, it's going to be tough on plants. I recently had a bout of Ich, and I treated with King British WS3 formula, which contains malachite green. It says for sensitive fish like loaches or light scaled fish you should half the dose. If you do that, it might...

    Ach! Ich!

I need some advice for my Betta who's not doing so well. He always seems to be the first to get sick when there's a bug about. At the moment I'm treating for Ich, as he's got numerous tiny white spots on his fins, but luckily none on his body. His fins are tattered too. The other fish in the...

    Esha 2000 Treatment

It's good stuff. I used some because my fish started flicking and rubbing, seems to have cleared them up! I also have a bamboo shrimp and 2 cherry shrimp, they seem ok after the treatment. Just watch out for your plants though! My green-leaf plants were ok, but my more sensitive plants with red...

    My 2 Month Old Aquarium

Thanks! It's 120 litres. I cycled the tank for 1 week using some of that safestart stuff, as well as a peice of shrimp. After a week of that, I introduced some platys. So all-in-all it took 2-3 weeks to cycle, with lots of water changes. I use Ferropol sand under the gravel, Ferropol...

    My 2 Month Old Aquarium

Thanks! Luckily I had some really good advice about the plants from a guy at the fish shop before I started out. They've just gone bananas. Read about landscaping your tank on this forum, helped me alot too. Thanks, I'll keep an eye on those two. I'm hoping because they're wildly different...

    My 2 Month Old Aquarium

Hi My tank has been going for 2 months now, plants have settle in, the fish seem happy. I've heard that the betta and the dwarf gourami would fight, but these guys completely ignore each other! What do you guys think? Any suggestions? Yeah, I know some don't like cheesy ornaments, but I...

Why Do We Name Or Bettas

Naming them attaches emotion and sentiment to them. I however name mine for hilarity purposes: My clown loach is called 'Bin Laden' - he's always hiding in caves my bamboo shirmp is called 'Fonzie' - he's always got his thumbs up saying 'Eeyyyyyy...' My ancistrus is called 'Steven' - cat fish...

    Undergravel Filters

I didn't know anyone used them anymore! That's why the LFS doesn't stock them. They're ineffecient, a pain, and messy. Rather go for a proper cannister filter and water pump. You can get one that sits inside your tank, or an external one.

    Bamboo Shrimp

Hi Just need some info on how to feed these guys I've got myself a bamboo shrimp, and being a filter feeder makes things interesting. I've been reading up on them, my tank is large enough (120 litres), but not mature enough (been going for about 2months now). So I'm guessing he needs some help...

    Ro/di Water?

Using RO water for tropical freshwater tanks is tricky, you need to carefully monitor the PH, general hardness and carbonate hardness. You should generally do this anyway, no matter what your water source is, but it's not essential. You need to remineralise RO water before adding it to your...

    Babies! Ok... Fry...

congrats! Well, not much you can do right now. You can keep them in there until they're big enough so that the other fish dont pose a threat to them. How long is up to you. If they have plenty of places to hide, then no probs. Then you can either release them into the tank with the others, or...

    Neverending Problem

No,definetely not sea salts. It's a special mix of minerals specifically for using RO water in freshwater tropical aquariums. It's basically a blend of various minerals (potassium, magnesium, calcium, etc) that your tropical fish and plants need. It's refered to as 'remineralizing' or...

    Neverending Problem

It might be something toxic in your tank that's killing your plants and weakening your fish and their immune systems, making them succeptable to finrot and the like. It could be some sort of chemical or heavy metal, perhaps present in the water. It could be flouride, high levels of chlorine...
