having a gravel substrate is usually not recomended for cories. the sharp edges on the gravel will cut their barbells, which they use for finding food. it will lead to barbell erosion and eventually the death of the cory. you can use rounded gravel that doesn't have any sharp edges though.

Plecos should not be kept in 10gal tanks. They can grow to be over a foot long. You might want to consider at a small shoal (about 3) of ottos. They will probably do a much better job at eating the algae. Pretty much all sharks shouldn't be kept in a 10gal either. There isn't too much you can...

cool looking thank... be sure to update on your progress. :cool: are you using an undergravel filter? if you are i would avoid plants that you would have to plant in the gravel. try to stick to plants that you can attach to things (ie java fern, anubias).

I'm pretty sure if you use peat in your filter, or add some driftwood it'll lower your pH. It will also give the water a sort of brownish tint. hth

I don't think any kind of fish would be able to live with the betta. Snails are an option. Would ghost shrimp be a viable option?? You could probably keep 2-3. I'm not too sure though, maybe somebody else can have some more input on them.

You can try to use styrofoam sheets, but i don't think that would work terribly well with your situation. i put a thing layer of styrofoam between my tank and stand to even out all glass imperfections.

convicts are new world cichlids, not african. their diet/water conditions are different, and shouldn't be kept together.

fasting my fish worked for me. now they only come up to bug me for food when i open the lid on the hood. noticing what you have in your tank... you might want to be careful. tiger barbs can get pretty nippy, and your angelfish will probably end up as a prime target. just a little heads up.....

crypts and anubias are good low light plants. you can try hygrophila polysperma, but thats risky. it grows pretty tall, even in my tank. they aren't flourishing, but they aren't dying either.

I found that in my tank, the otos aren't quick enough to find the algae wafers. I've tried it numerous times, even after turning off all of the lights in the room. The other fish always get to the wafers first. You can supplement their diet with vegetables. I've been using cucumber and zuccini...

woohoo! the tetras are at about their max length right now (aprox 2inches), so should i try to find some that are about the same length? Would 5 or 6 be a good number for them?? my tank would be: 3 otos, 5 zebra danios, 6 tiger barbs, 5-6 serpae tetras. edit: thanks arashi!

About 3 years ago i set up my first fish tank. It's 5 us gallons, and uses an ugf. After taking advice from my lfs (not the one i shop at any more....) i got 3 serpae tetras and 1 betta fish :crazy: ...needless to say i didn't know that serpae tetras are one of the worst fin nippers. my poor...

Clown loaches can't be kept in a tank that small. They can grow to be around one foot, which is way too big for a 33gal.

long > tall. i've seen some tall 20gal tanks at a lps, and it didn't look like it would hold too many fish. long would provide more swimming area for fish because there is more surface area.

One of my zebra danios has this little white blob looking thing on its lower lip/jaw area. it doesn't really look like ich.... Sorry I can't give a more accurate description or a picture. Can anybody help me on this :dunno:

Carbon is used in filter as media. So depending what kind of filter you have, you can probably go to your lfs and get some media that contains carbon. I'll try to find some examples for you.
