    Bacteria

The difference between Gram Positive and Gram Negative bacteria is based on the results of Gram staining... In general, Gram Positive bacteria will retain crystal violet dye while Gram Negative bacteria will not. Gram Positive bacteria have a different outside structure... they only have one...

    Cyanobacteria - Blue-Green Algae (BGA)

I have that problem too... This website: http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Algae/cyanobacteria.html has some pretty good information. I'm not too sure if i want to try one of the cures because it can possible affect the friendly bacteria, causing the ammonia and nitrite levels to rise =S that...

    Cleaning with CLR

I have my uncles old fish tank (hasn't been used in 6+ years) sitting in my garage. It's pretty dirty and there's a hard white substance over all of the walls (calcium/magnesium me thinks). My mom wants to clean it out using CLR, but i'm not too sure if its safe. This is a brief description of...

    Sythoning Water off

?_? i could never really understand why people sucket their hoses... you can use physics (yay!) to siphon the water. fill your siphon up with water, so that both ends are overflowing with water. then use your thumb and plug one end (usually the smaller end where the water flows out). Go to your...

    New a nice bottom feeder

having a gravel substrate is usually not recomended for cories. the sharp edges on the gravel will cut their barbells, which they use for finding food. it will lead to barbell erosion and eventually the death of the cory. you can use rounded gravel that doesn't have any sharp edges though.

    New a nice bottom feeder

Plecos should not be kept in 10gal tanks. They can grow to be over a foot long. You might want to consider at a small shoal (about 3) of ottos. They will probably do a much better job at eating the algae. Pretty much all sharks shouldn't be kept in a 10gal either. There isn't too much you can...

    My 55 gallon Mbuna Tank

hmm... i'm not too knowledgable with mbuna but i'll try... UGF are a real pain imo. i had one, and it would always clog up. everything in the tank had to be removed and the UGF cleaned. it was a big hassle, and that was only a 5gal  i think mbuna prefer a sandier substrate. it is more...

    My 55 gallon Mbuna Tank

cool looking thank... be sure to update on your progress. are you using an undergravel filter? if you are i would avoid plants that you would have to plant in the gravel. try to stick to plants that you can attach to things (ie java fern, anubias).

    Lowering PH

I'm pretty sure if you use peat in your filter, or add some driftwood it'll lower your pH. It will also give the water a sort of brownish tint. hth

Please recommend a fish to me

I don't think any kind of fish would be able to live with the betta. Snails are an option. Would ghost shrimp be a viable option?? You could probably keep 2-3. I'm not too sure though, maybe somebody else can have some more input on them.

Wanting to change from gravel to sand

i remember a post a while ago that the-wolf made about changing his tank from gravel to sand. after he had the sand, decorations and plants placed back in the tank, he got a clean pantyhose, and placed the gravel inside of it. he put the gravel filled panyhose in the tank for a while (not sure...

    WooHoo

You can try to use styrofoam sheets, but i don't think that would work terribly well with your situation. i put a thing layer of styrofoam between my tank and stand to even out all glass imperfections.

    Friendly Fish Syndrome, GAH!

fasting my fish worked for me. now they only come up to bug me for food when i open the lid on the hood. noticing what you have in your tank... you might want to be careful. tiger barbs can get pretty nippy, and your angelfish will probably end up as a prime target. just a little heads up.....

    Easy Plants for a Beginner...

crypts and anubias are good low light plants. you can try hygrophila polysperma, but thats risky. it grows pretty tall, even in my tank. they aren't flourishing, but they aren't dying either.

    Aquaclear VS Penguin

I'm going to be setting up a 10gal tank in my room pretty soon. Just gotta move my stuff around (moved to sister's old room  ) What kind of filter should I use for it? The Penguin-mini is only a few more dollars than the aquaclear mini. I've heard that the penguin filters sometimes...

    What to feed my otto?

I found that in my tank, the otos aren't quick enough to find the algae wafers. I've tried it numerous times, even after turning off all of the lights in the room. The other fish always get to the wafers first. You can supplement their diet with vegetables. I've been using cucumber and zuccini...

Can i move my serpae tetras?

woohoo! the tetras are at about their max length right now (aprox 2inches), so should i try to find some that are about the same length? Would 5 or 6 be a good number for them?? my tank would be: 3 otos, 5 zebra danios, 6 tiger barbs, 5-6 serpae tetras. edit: thanks arashi!

getting REALLY concerned about tiger barbs

This is my second tiger barb death in a few weeks :( There are 6 left. My mom found him around 5:30pm today, and i had just changed the water 2 1/2hrs earlier. I counted all the fish when i was doing my water change. Now the tiger barbs are getting much more aggressive. They seem to chase each...

    what should i get ?

long > tall. i've seen some tall 20gal tanks at a lps, and it didn't look like it would hold too many fish. long would provide more swimming area for fish because there is more surface area.

I've had my tank (see profile for specifications) set up for about 3 months now, with very little problems. Do you use Carbon all the time??

If you use a Penguin or Emperor filter, this is a filter cartrige made for the marineland HOB filters. It contains carbon surrounded by polywool. I use a fluval canister filter, so my carbon insert looks like this. I just soak it in some water (usually the water i just siphoned out) to get rid...

Do you use Carbon all the time??

Carbon is used in filter as media. So depending what kind of filter you have, you can probably go to your lfs and get some media that contains carbon. I'll try to find some examples for you.
