Lights arrived today! Made a very budget lid until we can get a bit of perspex or glass to go on top! Waiting a while to change the substrate i dont trust the parameters not to jump around with all this new stuff! Getting there though! Not sure how well the methylene blue is working though

Surely that wouldn't come from an orange mickey mouse platy? which were the only other type of live bearer in the tank at the time. They were previous fry that were born in the tank so theres no chance of fish shop dna.

its interesting that you've both said the mother was a platy because the mother was actually a guppy! It was in a fry trap and there were no platy's giving birth at the time. :S

I've found the cheap stuff from wilkinsons works a treat! I don't like the tetra stuff either - its too strong I think. Although mine don't seem to mind it. I wonder if your putting too much in?

As far as I can tell the only difference between goldfish and tropical is the heater! The gravel is the same (unless you go for an uber substrate enriched planted tank) but sand/gravel have always worked very well for me! All water tests are the same - freshwater The fish are of course...

I'd recommend neon plastic ones! :good: lol! I find that most colourful plants tend to die, the leaves all fall off! So they might need more care? (unless you already have that!) I cheated and changed the light in my tank to make the greens stand out more! :D

I have no idea why your fish died - unless the plants you ordered were poisonous(!) but I'm no expert!! Buying plants online is by far the cheapest option, wood is also cheaper online but you don't know what your getting! Depending on the size it could cost £2 or £100! My bit of wood cost £4...
