    Apisto Agassizzi

I really don't know, I'll have to test it but work away from home so won't be able to do so and put the results up until sat I'm afraid! sorry. I just know that I live in a particularly hard water area. I was a bit dubious about rain water too - wasn't sure if I'd be contaminating my tank with...

    Apisto Agassizzi

Thanks for the replies guys. I've seen the pair out and about a few times since I last posted. I think they've taken to living in a fake tree thing I have in there. I'm not bothered about breeding them - I just want to make sure they'll be ok in my water long term. The guy at the fish shop did...

    Apisto Agassizzi

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right forum, sorry if it's not. At the weekend I bought a beautiful pair of Apisto agassizzi. I know that they prefer soft water and had a talk with the lfs guy (it's a good lfs, they know their stuff) about this as our water in this area is naturally quite...

    Members New World Tanks

Nelly - is that a candy stripe plec? He's identical to mine - I've been trying to figure out what he is for ages and just came to the conclusion he must be a common because of how big he's grown!! How big is yours now?

    Red Leg!?

Did anyone else hear about this disease being introduced into the UK recently? Apparantly it's a tropical disease affecting amphibians which has somehow been introduced over here (presumably illegal import of some amphibean or another or someone releasing their tropical pets into the wild). My...

New Membre - Rtb Shark & 3 Catfish Dead :(

I'm not too hot on the disease identification to be honest (I'll leave that to the experts) but a few things I did pick up on that might be useful ... What temperature do you keep the tank at? Angels like higher temps so if it's too cool that may explain them hanging round near the heater and...

    Can I Get Kissing Gourami?

I think a 55 gal, with your current fish stock, might be a bit sall for two I'm afraid. Especially if you're planning for it to be their long-term home. I have one in a 50 gal at the min with a few other larger fish (Ruby shark, plec, senegal birchir, 3 spot gourami, angel fish and syno...

    Bgk

I've got a sort of faux-cave formation thing in there that he used to hang out in when he was a bit younger. I took everything except that out (my syno lives in there and wouldn't come out and didnt want to take him out the water) and he wasn't hiding anywhere. I suppose he could be in there but...

    24x15x12 - Amazon Biotope

This probably isn't the most useful of replies you'll get but I have pygmy cories and have found they don't actually spend as much time on the bottom as the other corys I have. They swi around the mid-water a lot more and tend to like to rest on the leaves of the amazon sword I have rather than...

    Pitbull Plec Pregnant!?

I think one of my pitbull plec's in preganant! I started off with three but unfortunately lost one and so have had just the pair of them for about a month now. I noticed one of them was getting pretty fat maybe two weeks ago and I'm pretty convinced she must be pregnant. I've never planned to...

    Your First Fish

Mine was a female paradise fish. Only I didn't get to cycle my tank because it was an emergency. My friend at uni decided she didn't want the hassle of travelling home with her at the end of third year and was going to flush her. I had a mad rush trying to get a tank (turned out another friend...

Male Or Female? Kribs And Royal Ram?

Just out of interest, can anyone tell me how to sex kribs? I've been thinking about getting a pair for one of my tanks and was planning to have a look for some this weekend. I was told that, with rams, the best way to sex them is that males have a long second (or third) spike (I know that's the...

    Senegal Bichir

Wow, sound like I'm pretty lucky with mine (sort of). Although he is still only a youngster so maybe he'l get less active. He' goes everywhere in the tank and will eat food anywhere from about the middle of the tank. He was a bit slow to eat to start with but now gobbles down pretty much...

    22" Fire Eel

I love all the bubbles! lol. Some of my fish would go mad in a tank like that. How many air pumps dp you use for that? I've only got a small one which will only really do twi airstones - keep considering buying a bigger one!

    Bgk

MY BGK died last week  At least, I can only presume he did as he's nowhere to be found. I think my plec and senegal birchir may have eaten him (after he died - I hope)!! Before I even consider getting another, I just wanted to check that it wasn't one of the other fish in the tank that...

    Senegal Birchir ... Please Help!

Sorry ... I'm having real trouble finding the cable to upload pictures ... but im still looking i promise. water's fine - nitrite and ammonia no trace and nitrate barely changing colour (so not even 5).

    Senegal Birchir ... Please Help!

I've taken some pics ... just trying to lay my hands on the cable to post them. He's trying to swim now and it seems to me thatthe back bit of his bulge (the bit i said was see-through) is full of air. He keeps trying to swim down and that bit of his body wont go below the surface. and when he...

    Senegal Birchir ... Please Help!

He's just very lethergic. He's not responding if i wiggle my fingers in the water near him when he would normally either swim up to me (looking for food) or run away - depending on his mood. He looked like he was gasping a bit earlier but he's not now - he's not breathing any faster or slower...

    Senegal Birchir ... Please Help!

The tank has really fine gravel. There's no gravel type lumps that I can see and I quite often watch him feed and havnt noticed him doing anything that might risk him ingesting the gravel. He tends to just grab lumps of food from the side and then take them somewhere quiet to chew on. I'll go...

    Senegal Birchir ... Please Help!

No - no redness around the anus. His belly isnt so much red ... its just that you can see all his veins very clearly in his belly - it looks a bit like bloodshot eyes. The front part of his bloated belly looks almost silvery/white underneath and the back part is almost clear. I havnt ever seen...

    Senegal Birchir ... Please Help!

Hi, I've had a young senegal birchir for about 3 months now and I think there's something seriously wrong with him! For a few weeks now he's been getting really really fat. I was worried but noticed it got worse when he ate so thought maybe I was just overfeeding him. I cut down his food but...

    Sand Substrate!

Hi, I'm setting up my new tank next week and wanted a bit of advice on sand as a substrate. I'm hoping to get some dwarf chain loaches (who apparantly like sand) and I've always thought it looks quite nice so thought I'd give it a go. Thing is - I was wondering if it woud be possible to go...

    Unfiltered Tank

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I think I might give it a go with the under-gravel filter and see how that goes. Then, if he doesn't like it I'll just have to take it out and I think I'll probably do like 3 50% ish water changes a week. Mel - He's a red and sort of iridescent bluey/green...

Severums And Festivums (i Hope That's The Fish I Mean)

Hey, I'm setting up a 180l tank next week and wondered if anyone could tell me what other fish these cichlids are compatible with. I'm not planning on getting a cichlid tank and was originally thinking of having angels and some dwarf cichlids (apistos i think and maybe move my rams over) with...

    Rainbow Fish

Does anyone know if it's true that different types of rainbow fish will shoal together. So, if you were meant to get 6 you could have, for example, 3 bosemanis and 3 blue rainbow fish and they'd be just as happy as 6 bosemanis?? Can't think where I read it and just wanted it confirmed before I...

    Unfiltered Tank

ooh - lots of replies! lol. Thanks guys. Mel - I was thinking I could use it but my last betta was in a filtered tank and went nuts everytime he went near the water flow! So was thinking to try something different this time. I suppose I could just give it a bit of trial and error and if my new...

    Unfiltered Tank

Courtesy of Mel (thanks!! :D) I now have a nice new home for the next nice little betta boy that takes my fancy - think I'll go betta shopping this w/e WHOOP!! :D But first I do have a couple of questions - I've not kept a betta in an unfiltered tank but, seeing as it's going to be just him...

    Patchy Plec

I'm no expert but whenI first got my plec he would go kind of patchy - bits of him would change to a dull colour and I thought he was going to die! lol. However, after looking it up on t'internet it seems that many plecs can do this as a kind of camoflage!? My plec still changes colour but he's...

    Female Betta Compatability

Hey, I just wondered if someone could tell me what other fish a female betta would live happily with? I know that a lot of you keep them in sororities but are they suitable for a community set up?? I'm getting a new tank next week and having a bit of a shuffle around before I add more fish. I'm...

    Seeding A New Tank!?

Hey, So I'm hopefully getting a new tank next week (woohoo!!) and just have a quick question about cycling. I know that if I move some of the filter media over from my other tank this will speed it up but can anyone tell mw how much filter media is safe to move over!? In my current filter I...

    Pink Kissing Gourami Not Eating

Have you noticed the other kisser chasing the one that won't eat? My two fight like mad and one of them is constantly getting picked on by the larger one. She also hides away and doesn't come out for feeding time - I just have to put some flakes over where she's hiding while all the others are...

    Peacock Goby: Add Another?

I'm pretty sure that's a female. Males have a kind of humped head and females tend to have black edging to some of their fins (but not always). As far as adding the other goes - i don't see it could do any harm. I have a male and 2 females in my main tank and they get on just fine. they tend...

    Angelfish

yea, i tend to keep all my fish in pairs (unless there's an obvious reason why i shouldnt!) but wasn't sure whether it was advisable or not with angels! Would two males or two females fight if they were together do you know?? Thanks

    Chinese Algae Eaters

CAE's grow up to be aggressive and they stop eating algae at the same time. So not ideal as a community algae eater really. But gorgeous fish all the same. I ended up buying another tank for mine when he needed moving out of the community tank - couldn't bear to get rid of him! lol
