Regular (weekly) gravel cleans will help, as well as magnetic glass cleaners, which will scrub the eggs from the glass. This will keep them under control. I believe a few snails are beneficial to a tank.

I set mine for about 26degrees or so. As for the hot weather, it's much easier to keep the correct temp when your house is airconditioned!

I have an AquaOne 100watt heater and it's usually 1 or 2 degrees out. I'll have it set at, say 26 degrees celcius, but my thermometer will show approx 24. :unsure: Invest in a thermometer - it's one of the cheapest things to get and will give you peace of mind. :good:

I've heard shelled peas are good for stopping this. I usually give my platy one or two a week.

My Bristlenose catfish does a superb job of keeping the tank and rocks clean.

You may find that the tannins might take weeks to clear up. I actually think it adds a nice natural look to the tank.

Has anyone here had any first hand experience with the Aqua One canister filter range? All product reviews seems to say that it is a great filter. I am specifically looking at the CF-1000 and CF-1200 filters. Thanks, Chris_qld

I have recently read (cannot remember source, sorry) that Ich cannot live without moisture whatsoever. If this is true, drying out your substrate and rocks etc should rid you completely of this blasted infection. Obviously, a full cycle would be in order after this. Can anybody else shed more...

This happened with my 16g tank. Usually the brown algae (diatoms) is due to (1) a lack of light (rather than too much light), and (2) an 'immature' tank. You may find that the algae will disappear over time.

If you know what the word 'exponential' means, you'd be best removing it!

I agree, go the Bristlenose Catfish. They don't grow too large and great little guys. Mine will fight off my angels trying to steal his (her?) algae wafers.

Generally I just take a frozen pea, run it under hot water for a few seconds, squeeze the skin off and then throw it in the tank. The fish LOVE it.

Just put a bit of gravel inside to weigh it down and you're laughing. I agree... in certain circumstances/settings it can look quite cool.

Hi All, Yesterday I noticed that one of my angelfish's (1 inch) feelers looked like it kinda 'snapped' about 7/8ths down. After observing it for a while it actually fell off whilst competing for an algae wafer with a BN catfish.. Anyway - didn't think much of it, you know, got into a scrap etc...

Now that's awesome.. however, where's the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? I'm not sure that it's entirely possible but hey.. it's awesome enough. :drool:

a small LCD screen / monitor on the side of your tank which told you: Temp (yes I know there already is) PH Ammonium Nitrite Nitrate Phosphate etc. Seriously, if there was this information available REAL TIME, fish keeping would be so much easier. If there is already such a product...

Out of interest, would the beneficial bacteria seriously die off in the 2 days absence, requiring a whole cycle again? If so, couldn't you place some flakes in there to slow feed some ammonia into the tank? Hmmm..

I would: Turn off all electrical equipment - light, filter, heater etc. Eliminate 50% of the water. Put all filter media into a bucket with existing water. Cover if possible (for the trip). Put all fish into other container(s) complete with tank water water. Put ALL gravel (if possible)...
