Help needed asap, sick platy (ulcers) - Updated

Well I finished a 5 day course to treat the ulcers and the platy is a lot more lively and swimming around the tank as usual. However, one of the ulcers is still there and is fairly big. Is this likely to be a further problem, or will it just go in time?

Help needed asap, sick platy (ulcers) - Updated

I had been treating the tank for interior infection as I had feared that what was wrong witht the platy before the ulcers appeared. Levels are: Ammonia and Nitrite are 0 Nitrates are fairly high but not unusual. Water is fairly hard and the pH level is around 7. Nothing unusual in the...

Help needed asap, sick platy (ulcers) - Updated

My female platy hasn't been looking well recently and has been pestered by one of the cherry barbs, but today I noticed she now has 2 large white spots on her back which I am guessing are ulcers. Not quite sure how these developed although the platy has been hiding by a rock in the tank and may...

    Mysterious death

No worries, it helps to be prompted to think about aything that could have caused it. I suppose the best thing is just to keep a close eye on the rest of the fishies in case they start falling ill too. Thanks for your input anyway (and i'm sorry to hear of your loss too).

    Mysterious death

Currently doing 25% water changes every 2 weeks at which point I add 'Leaf Zone' (for the plants) and Stress Zyme. The new water is treated with Aqua Plus before it enters the tank. I haven't added any live stock or plants for months and months as I feel anymore will overstock the tank...

    Mysterious death

I've been running a 20 gallon tank for just over a year now, and aside from the usual beginner probs its been running very smoothly. There hasn't been a death in the tank this year as far as I can remember despite having an old guppy who every now and then looks like he's ready to keel over, but...

A case of swimbladder and fin rot...

I have problems with two of my fishes: 1. I have a male platy who seems to have been on his last breath for the past few weeks, he just lies on the bottom on his side barely moving. I've treated the tank several times with a treatment for internal parasites, but its made litlle difference. He...

Yellow spots on my white Balloon Molly

Thats what i'm currently thinking too. Its not too noticeable so I could have easily missed it until now, and she's as active as ever. Thanks for your reply, its reassured me a bit anyway :)

Yellow spots on my white Balloon Molly

Not sure if this is an 'emergency' so I thought i'd post here. Basically, i've noticed little yellow spots on my white Balloon Molly. I've had her for months and not noticed it before, but then its only when i was looking closely that i've saw them. Her character hasn't changed in the slightest...

Need help with my Betta tank!

He seems to be calming down a bit now, lets just hope he has some sort of intelligence to work it out :P . I'll give it a couple of days for him to settle a bit more before I start getting worried about it! Thats what spending all your money on these fish does to you, not enough cash for...

Need help with my Betta tank!

I just got myself a Betta for my 5 gallon tank. One problem though, the back panel of the tank is reflective, and I think the Betta is convinced that there's another male in there with him as he keeps trying to get at his reflection. Will this stress out the fish, and is there anything suitable...

Can I add a couple of neons to this set-up?

Gonna get the Betta in the next few days assuming the tank finishes cycling (which its very close to at the moment), so it'll be a week or so before I get them, but i'll let you know how it all goes  Thanks again for your advice, its really appreciated! :D

What is wrong with my honey gourami?

No advice here i'm afraid, but my Gouramis tend to do what yours are too. The male seems quite active, but the 2 females tend to hide away in the plants and barely move, or they'll just be sitting on the gravel in the corner. One of them was lying on its side under the heater the other day and I...

    conflicting info

I have 2 Boesemani Rainbowfish in a community tank. They generally keep themselves to themselves, but are very active and no problems with them pestering the other fish, even though they are fairly bigger than the rest of them. Would definitely recommend them for your tank :)

Can I add a couple of neons to this set-up?

Trust me, I've learnt from the mistake of not letting a tank cycle. The 5 gallon tank is till cycling, although its had a headstart as I'm using a small filter thats been in my bigger tank for months as well as some water from it too. Haven't got the Betta yet, just planning ahead :) Thanks...

Can I add a couple of neons to this set-up?

Thanks for the replies! Seems like corys are the way to go, my only concern is that if they get too big for the 5 gallon tank. Is this likely to happen? Sorry for all the questions! :)

    reducing water hardness

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to reduce the water hardness? I live in very hard water area and also wanted to reduce it, I did this by filtering the water and/or boiling it then adding it. Takes a very long time though! :S As water changes were taking so long, I asked various LFS's...

Can I add a couple of neons to this set-up?

Ok thanks for your replies! I get the impression this would a bad idea then. How about some corys instead? Would they be ok in a small tank like this?

    He's all alone

Not sure about the Danio because I don't keep them, but I wouldn't worry about the Cherry Barbs as they generally don't shoal together. I bought 5 of them thinking they did, but they often keep themselves to themselves (they shoal more often with the Rasboras, probably having an identity crisis...

    What exactly Cycling?

If you look around (particularly the pinned posts) there are some very good explanations on the subject. For what its worth, never stock up the tank quickly without giving it a chance to cycle properly. I (and many others here) learnt this the hard way after watching 5 Glowlight tetras die...

    New Fish

That reminds me of the pineapple Swordtails I saw today, looked really impressive (just wish I had more room in my tank for them ;) ). What colour are the ones you got?

Can I add a couple of neons to this set-up?

Not long ago I set-up a 5 gallon Betta tank, and was wondering if I could add a couple of neons to it. Its well planted and has hiding places, but I don't want to risk either the neons or the Betta, and would rather just keep the one fish in there if its safer. (It has an internal filter by the...

Effective ways of reducing water hardness?

I suppose its just a bit of a worry as the GH & KH are about 3 times the recommended level for a community tank, so I was planning to try and gradually bring it down by using the water changes to dilute the aquarium a bit. However, I can see what you're both saying, so if you think its...

Effective ways of reducing water hardness?

I live in an area which has very hard water. So far it hasn't caused any problems in my tank, but I really want to reduce it to be on the safe side. Does anyone know if the water treatment kits you can get are any good, or is there a better way of doing this? Any help would be appreciated :)

Well i'm currently giving them a few flakes of the colour version in the morning, then feeding them normally at night. Thanks for your opinions :)

    Balloon Mollies

I bought one black and one white balloon molly about a month ago, and they're real characters in my tank. I read recently that they suffer problems of disease much easier than other mollie though. Has anyone heard anything about this, or had problems with balloon mollies?

    Colouring flakes

I mainly feed my fish on Aquarian tropical flakes and bloodworm, but recently bought the colour version of the flakes as well. Just wondering if anyone on here uses them, and if the fish show any noticeable differences? Thanks :)

    A few questions...

Thanks for your help. The Platies are starting to look more square-shaped, one of them seems smaller but I can't see any fry so its probably just in my mind. As for the Betta, I take it i'd need a filter and heater for a new bowl too? Is there any chance that one would be ok in a couple of years...

    yet another question.

The same happened to one of my Guppies, just completely disappeared in the space of 12 hours. Talking to various people with aquariums it looks like the only explanation was that it must have been eaten, most probably by the other Guppies. Could well have been the case with your Danios, but I...

    A few questions...

I started up my tank (around 20 gallons in size) a couple of months ago, and so far, so good (had a few casualties, mainly down to inexperience though). There's a few things I wouldn't mind help with if someone is kind (or bored ;) ) enough to assist me:- 1. I have the list of my fish below. I...
