    Canister Filter Question

Hmmm, well maybe I'll switch out the carbon for some biological media... didn't realize the consensus was against carbon. Regardless, am I right to be concerned about the media bag not fitting snugly and allowing water to flow around it?

    Canister Filter Question

Great, thanks! I will try the panty hose. @peter: I'm also running an Eheim wet/dry, so I figured that would provide enough bio filtration. Plus, the carbon keeps the H2O crystal clear :D

    Canister Filter Question

Hey everyone, I have an Eheim 2217 canister filter. I used to buy the Eheim flexible media bags and fill them with activated carbon, but I can't find the bags anymore. I recently purchased online a new kind of media bag, but to my dismay, it's not flexible, and doesn't fit snugly in the...

    Angel Sick? Updated

Gotcha, thanks again. I've stopped treatment and resumed carbon filtering. The discus are about 5 months old now, is it possible that they are trying to mate/pair off? Could that be causing their aggression? If so, will it subside, or do I need to separate them?

    Angel Sick? Updated

Thanks Tolak. The discus with the small white patch is the largest of the bunch, and I've never seen anyone pick on him. The white spot also has a very small, thin strand swinging off of it. Despite this, do you still think it's only from aggression? Here's the thing that really irked me...

    Angel Sick? Updated

So, I was checking on everyone this morning and I noticed two abnormalities: The discus were being abnormally aggressive towards each other (mostly body poking). I also noticed a very very small white spot on the dorsal fin of one discus. Looks like the start of a fungus maybe. I shut off...

    Angel Sick? Updated

Although my angel appears to be acting normally, the tips of her find have turned milky white. I'm also noticing that the fins are looking a bit shorter and less robust. Any ideas?

    Eheim Filter Media

I recently purchased an Eheim Classic Canister. I had planned on using activated carbon in it, but it came with some unfamiliar media--light beige spheres, slightly smaller than marbles, with a rough texture. What is this? How often does it need to be changed? When medications require carbon...

    Spotted Cat, Synodontis Angelicus

I've always loved these guys, and I just picked up two the other day. I noticed there is no entry in the fish index for them. Does anyone have any advice on keeping them happy and healthy? I'm keeping them in a highly filtered 90 USG with a couple angels and a few discus, pH ~6.5. I'll post...

    Pleco Caught In Powerhead

Covering it is definitely an idea. I'll see what I have lying around. Thanks for all the ideas. You know, I probably don't even need the UGF. I had set it up with the tank originally, but have since added an eheim 2229 wet dry and a 2217 canister. I've heard, though, that it is not safe to...

    Pleco Caught In Powerhead

For the past year or so, I have been running the Hagen powerheads in my 90 gallon tank in reverse. That is, they push oxygenated water down into the undergravel filter. Yesterday, I noticed my pleco hanging out by the powerhead for a very long time. I eventually realized that he had been...

    Possible Hexamita

It's a well undercrowded 90 gallon setup. Water params all good, pH 6.5. I feed them a combination of live black worms, frozen brine shrimp, and tetramin flakes. For now, I'll try the shelled peas and keep a close eye on her.

    Possible Hexamita

One of my angels has been excreting long stringy white poop. Although she is otherwise acting normal, I am concerned that this may be the early stages of Hexamita. If other activity appears to be normal, is long white stringy poop always a sign of internal parasites? Would it be smart to...

    Fin Damage

Thanks much for the help. I've got the puffer in his own tank, and I'm going to treat the community tank. Any way to tell whether the infection is funal or bacterial? I'm debating whether to use melafix, maracide, or malachite green.

    Fin Damage

I'm going to put him in a tank by himself. What about the whiteness on the discus caudal fin? Doesn't that look suspicious?

    Fin Damage

Yeah, most people are surprised about the oscar. He grew up in a community tank, and he never really developed any aggression. He's quite friendly, actually--more so than my sevs (in another tank). I might switch the puffer for a while, although I really haven't seen him bothering anyone. He...

I see the damage on a couple of my fish. I've been treating the tank with Rid Ich for the last couple days. Does this look like chemical damage or fin nipping damage or something else?

Staying At The Top Back Of The Tank?

I'm new to dwarf gouramis... my pair seem to hang out exclusively at the very top, back of the tank. Is that normal? I know that they tend to be middle/top dwellers because of their ability to breath oxygen from the air, but is it normal for them to stay there (and not move around very...

    Help!

I can't believe it, but he's still pullin' through on his side on the bottom of the tank.... and now there is a HUGE piece of unbelievably thick curly fry poop which is coming out of his fish butt!! I hope that is the problem!!! I feel a lot better now. Pray for him!

    Help!

hmmmm that could very well be it. About a month ago I started feeding him live black worms which I started buying to feed to my fire eels (in another tank). He also ate some turkey a few days ago. I don't see a poop trail on him, but there are definitely no signs of disease. He's just lying...

    Help!

I introduced a few new fish today... two discus, 3 puffer fish, 3 clowns, and 2 gouramis. About 30 minutes after I introduced the fish, my favorite large gold severum was on his side on the bottom! He's still there! Everybody else is fine! What happened!?! What can I do!?!

    Cichlid Compatibility

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I think I'll keep the sev and the oscar together for now, and just keep a close eye on them. Lynden, the peacock is about 1" long and shaped like a slender tiger barb. He is brown with vertical black stripes.

    Cichlid Compatibility

Yeah, I keep the pH around 6.6, which I now know is much too low for the peacock. I have an extra 45 gallon tank that might make for a nice african cichlid community. Thanks for the advice, dt. What about the oscar and the severum? Is there a possibility that they may be OK together?

    Cichlid Compatibility

I think I may have made a bad decision this weekend… I have a 110 gallon community tank. It has been populated for quite some time by a catfish, a pleco, a knife fish, a tinfoil barb and a 6†gold severum. The severum is not overly aggressive, but during feeding he will chase away anyone...
