I see the damage on a couple of my fish.

I've been treating the tank with Rid Ich for the last couple days. Does this look like chemical damage or fin nipping damage or something else?

Could be fin rot, or just a little aggression. What size is the tank, what fish does it contain, and what are the results of water tests?

90 gallon

pH 6.5
0 Ammonia
0 nitrite

1 oscar
2 discus
1 pleco
1 chinese hi fin
3 clowns
2 dwarf gouramis
1 dwarf puffer (RECENTLY ADDED - COULD BE THE CULPRIT?)

I've never seen the puffer bothering anyone, and I've been watching closely--I know they are known for being nippers.

Puffers can get nasty, it's what may be happening. Angel fins get the same look to them after a little battle, like fin rot but with small pieces missing.

I'm surprised the discus get along with the oscar, much less the puffer. Good chance the oscar is messing with the puffer & getting the worse end of the deal.

Yeah, most people are surprised about the oscar. He grew up in a community tank, and he never really developed any aggression. He's quite friendly, actually--more so than my sevs (in another tank).

I might switch the puffer for a while, although I really haven't seen him bothering anyone. He seems to mind his own business.

The discus are showing the same type of injuries... I'm taking some pics right now.

OK, what I'm noticing on the smaller discus is the whitening of the fin... isn't that characteristic of fin rot?

dwarf puffers should be kept in species only tanks, and most of the time only in singles. Its quite likely to be fin nipping

I'm going to put him in a tank by himself.

What about the whiteness on the discus caudal fin? Doesn't that look suspicious?

yeah it does, sorry didnt notice the first time. Once a fin is damaged it makes it easier for other probs like fin rot to set it. Maybe a dose of anti fugus meds?

Thanks much for the help.

I've got the puffer in his own tank, and I'm going to treat the community tank.

Any way to tell whether the infection is funal or bacterial? I'm debating whether to use melafix, maracide, or malachite green.

Fungal is white, bacterial is red. Often after injury some whiteness will occur, red is someting you need to watch for.

I would go with melafix & daily water changes for about a week. I've healed some really torn up fish with water changes alone.
