    My aquariums

Beautiful tanks!! But... the maintenance would take a lot of my retired time and $$$. Congratulations, I only wish.

Is it normal for new aquarium pipes to leak?

Step back, take a breather and go over the fittings again. Did this come with instructions? If the leak is coming out of threaded fittings, Teflon tape can help. And it is not normal to have any leaks.

    Your preferred cannister brand/model

Been using two Fluval 203 canister filters since the early 90’s and still running strong. So those are my favorite.

Fish tanks, for busy people with too much money...

Fishkeeping is a hobby, hobbies need dedicated time. There are gadgets that will make your water changes and your hobby easier to maintain, I was done carrying buckets years ago, I now use a hose. There are other exceptions I guess... People traveling, working long hours etc and of course, these...

Very high Nitrates even after major water changes

Im probably late for the party but 1-Why use RO water? 2-Forget the bacteria in a bottle, donate your $$ to the poor. 3-Test kits will drive you crazy. 4- Do not change the filter media, rinse only and re-use. This is where your bacteria lives. 5-Seachem Prime, good. 6-Frequent water changes...

    New canister filter buzzing noise

Sorry to read about your issues with your canister filter. I use a pair of ancient 30 year old Fluval filters that are very quiet but occasionally when they do make noise, it has to do with air inside of them. What I usually do other than the on/off thing, before I turn them on, I make sure they...

    "Biologically mature"

The filter is where most of your beneficial bacteria lives, not too many people talk about this anymore. When you cycle a tank, you’re basically cycling the filter or maturing it till it’s safe to add fish. The bacteria, once it has flourish, needs the water passing through it, one of the...

    Aqueon tanks?

All my tanks have been Aqueon for the last 20 years. That said, last month after running a 40 gallon for more than a year, leveled and on a flat surface, emptied out on me on the floor, poor silicone job. But I went back and got another one!

    High Mortality Tank

Reading your first post, two things that raised a red flag for me. First, that all your readings are at ”0” even the nitrates. Second, cleaning the filters every 4/5 weeks, it takes that many weeks or more to cycle a filter. Not sure exactly how you clean your filter but an uncycled system can...

    swordtail drama continues...

So I agree and disagree in many ways. Nowhere in this thread I have read about his water changes or tank maintenance habits but Im assuming this is probably a long going issue for this guy or gal. I agree that at some point yes, you need to step back and as you mentioned, not sure how the 50%...

    swordtail drama continues...

Big water changes kill fish, wow. Swordtails are dying in his tank and water conditions are "not a concern"? Tank maintenance is priority. A water change may not cure the problem, but problems occur from lack of water changes and poor maintenance.

I would not focus so much on your parameters and meds, just do frequent water changes.

Does it matter what type of paint I use on the OUTSIDE of an aquarium?

If you're brushing, it doesn't matter, empty or not, just don't get paint inside. With a spay, it's different.

    Aquarium light height

Thank you for your input. This has already been thought of as I would put a small strip in front of the light to prevent it from shining in my eyes. About 2-3 inches higher would be ideal to light up the whole aquarium nicely. BTW, it is not a planted tank.

    Colour foods

I can testify to that. I love carrot juice but have to be mindful on how much of it to drink.

    Aquarium light height

Anyone has any "creative" ideas on how to raise an aquarium light? I'm using an Aquaneat LED with the sliding brackets, awesome light btw, and very thin low profile. The light is strong enough but a bit higher would light up the whole aquarium nicely.

So what can be worse than...

Nah, go ahead and buy it, they are fine. I have one that I re-sealed after 10 years of service (just as precaution) and have had many Aqueon tanks without issues.

So what can be worse than...

All my tanks are and have been in the basement with cement floor so nothing really damaged, couple of hours clean up plus a trip to the store for a replacement tank. I would never have a tank on carpet ot wood floors.

40 years of service? You misunderstood, I've been in the hobby 40 years and this has never happened. Thanks for your concern tough!

So what can be worse than...

Aqueon. I repaced my old Aqueon with a new one last yar just to be sure it didn't leak! Anyway, Im not ready to bash the brand yet, in the last 20-25 years they've all been Aqueon, bigger sizes too without issues.

So what can be worse than...

Crazy! Of all places to leak, right at the bottom! Another few hours the fish would have been dried up. No sales, $125, ouch. Oh well, I guess this is the part of the hobby we never think about, also this is why I will never have tanks unless there is a basement... just in case.

So what can be worse than...

40 gallons of water on the floor! My one-year-old 40g just gave out, from the bottom of all places! Good thing I caught it in time to save the fish in one inch of water. Funny thing... this was a replacement for a 10 year old 40g that I had and thought it was time to change before it started...

    Rebuilding and Restocking

I agree. I've had a couple of power blackouts that have lasted 3 to 4 days, to wake up one morning with all filters running (power back up) without issues. As far as the Angels also from my experience, is a toss of the dice. They are cichlids after all and behave pretty much like it, some can be...

Should I bother with cycling a tank? (and other stupid questions)

This will go against the grain here, but here it goes, I don't bother with the cycling though I'm not against it, I think it works when done properly. I did this decades ago when I started my first saltwater tank. Anyway, with good filtration and a tank say bigger than 15-20 gallons, I put a...

    Uncovered tank - advice needed

Not sure what advice to give you... All of my tanks have been uncovered through decades of doing this and never a problem...yet. I've had tanks with plants growing out of them and looked really cool, for the last 15 years I've had and still have African Cichlids with open tops.

I know Im late to the party here and sorry for your fish death. Did you do frequent water changes?
  34. G

Do not use anti-biotics unless you know what the problem is.

I'll go as far as saying, "Don't use any meds" unless, if you want to put the infected fish in a separate tank with meds. Most diseases occur from lack of maintenance or an addition of a new fish to the tank, other than that, frequent water changes and not over feeding will let you have a...
