    Lighting Overkill?

Hi Guys/Gals,   Quick question I have a Red Sea Max 250 Reef tank that I am dismantling and was thinking of converting this to a tropical planted aquarium.  At the moment this tank has 6 x 39w t5 tubes, If I was to replace these with arcadia plant pro would I need a full 6 tubes?  234w seems...

    Pseudotropheus Demasoni Has Cloudy Eye

Hi Ferris, Thanks for the reply, I checked the water this morning after I noticed the problem and the results are as they should be - zeros across the board, Ph 7.6 and the nitrate 5.0 ppm Having another look now the eye does indeed look swollen. I'm surprised I didnt pick that up on first...

    Pseudotropheus Demasoni Has Cloudy Eye

Hello all, Not sure if i need to be overly worried here or not here but I noticed today that my male demasoni has a cloudy eye. He is very territorial with the other fish but normally just chases them away from his patch rather than a full on fight so I'm guessing he has knocked his eye...

Pair Of Angels Fighting After Spawn

Me personally no. I read a few references that if you raise the eggs to fry and so fourth by yourself that when they then come to breed they loose the maternal instinct that they would of gained from their parents so I'd like the mated pair to raise them initially with me as the food...

Pair Of Angels Fighting After Spawn

Morning, My pair of Angels which I have had for almost 2 years have been living quite happily with Cardinal tetra's and a snowball Plec in their 30g without any problems and lay eggs every fortnight. Unfortunately they do like to gobble them up after a few days but I did come close once with...

    17 Electric Blue Fry

Congrats Julia, Tis the season for new bundles of joy. Hope you have space for all these fry? My seven Labidochromis sp – “Hongi” are growing at a rapid rate. Almost had some demasoni fry last week but just as I was about to move the female to a seperate tank she spat them and everyone else...

Can Anyone Tell Me What These Are?

Hi Mark, I believe the first one is a Labidochromis caeruleus (Male), second looks like a Pseudotropheus demasoni (Female), looks stressed which is why the colours are so weak, as the colour should be dark blue and light blue bars: I have this fish and her colours change when I move the tank...

Dilemma - Can You Mix Multiple Fry?

Hi Guys, After a bit of advice please: My (Labidochromis sp) – “Hongi” gave birth to 7 fry (first attempt) about two weeks ago (I didn’t even know she was holding so a bit of a surprise). Infact she was currently recuperating in my community tank (I didn’t have anywhere else at the time)...

    Malawi Acting Strange

Hi Guys, I haven’t been on here for some time as everything has been fine in the Malawi tank but just recently a few of the inhabitants have been acting a little oddly. First I did a mammoth water change when I came back from China in December (about 65%) and my yellow labs started to chase...

    Where to buy water containers?

Most LFS that sell R.O water will give you the container for about £1 on its own. I buy 4 25L/5 Gallon white drums at a time with the ro water for £3.50 at any of the Maidenhead Aquatic Stores. You can fit a heater inside and a small Juwel powerhead for mixing.

The Rekord is 96 Litres or 21.12 UK Gallons or 25.34 US Gallons. Why we all can’t be on the same volume conversion I'll never know. Hmmm well even more confused with the lighting issue now. I went out and brought the power-glo anyway so that I have both just incase I need to swap. I will see...

    Internal Filter, Keep or bin?

Hi Ben, Well I couldnt get the internal filter out even with a sharp hot knife hacking away at the silicone, I've removed all the sponges and the only thing thats in there is the heater. The external filter (Fluval 204) currently still has all the media inside, Activated carbon, biomax and...

Tank without a Filter, how does it cycle? and Fish

Hi Guys, So recently - 3 weeks ago I decided to buy two small 8 gallon tanks so I could try and breed Dwarf Gourami's and Honey Gourami's. (I have never kept these particular species of Gourami before) I think I may have gone about this the wrong way and didn’t buy filters for these two tanks...

Hi Guys, I've been keeping general tropical fish, Cichlids and Discus for around 12 years now and thought about trying Brackish Fish before the big jump to marine. I was hoping that you guys might be able to help me regarding the basics to setting up a brackish tank. There is a tiny bit of...

    Black Spot Treatment

I have herd that no treatment is necessary as once the parasite has completed its cycle it will simply die. Don’t know how I got it but read someone that it may have come from snails. It's not lethal (apparently) but doesn’t look too attractive on silver and gold fish. Perhaps I'll try the...

    Mollies picking on bristlenose

Hi Sarah, Just looked at your signature that lists your tank contents and it could be that your getting close to being fully stocked for that 63L (I know it doesnt look much but those fish need room). The mollies probably want to share the same space as the Bristlenose and therefore fighting...

    small tanks...ie 5 gallons

I had a clearseal 18x10x10 with a plastic hood and one of those lights which you buy off the self from arcadia, which you then fix yourself to the plastic hood and it got EXTREMELY hot even with the metal reflector between the bulb and the hood. It didnt melt though so my view is it would be...

    Plec or similar?

Hi Ferris, 18" - Wow - That's a biggie. Anything a little smaller? Hmmm I have just had to remove my BN from another tank and take him to the LFS as he was extremely territorial. I didnt think to put him in the Cichlid tank. Doh!

    Plec or similar?

Hi All, What can I put in with my malawi to tackle food at the bottom? Up until now I havent had any algae problems so perhaps no need for an algae eater as such. I do have some albino corys in there at the moment (left over from when the tank was cycling) but now the Malawi's are bigger they...
