i faced exactly the same prob as you when i first started keeping fish a year or so ago, tried the manual cleaning device and it was rubbish. switched to a battery powered cleaner (you don't have to agitate nearly as much), replaced the rubbish bags they supply with the foot part of womans...

i keep a small saucer and knife in my tank stand. cut off half a square, put on saucer, leave on top of tank lid (when lights are on) 'til it melts to room temp ... then dump 'em in and watch the fun begin :S . as for rinsing first ...... :/
