Big Steve!

How is it "Cool" that someone has taken such a big fish from its native waters, and probably exposed it to a horribly slow death..

What the hell makes you want to fish for sharks? Sardines or something like that i can vaugly understand, but not a graceful creature such as a shark.

*sigh*

Ben

yea, I'm just so sure the bullet wound to poor ol' Steve's brain was "horribly slow". Chill out before you think somebody is abusing an animal, alright? I would never kill something like that in an inhumane way. And like you never eat fish... and what's the diffrence between slowly, horrible killing a sardine and a shark? they're both fish, and would both experience the same pain in the same situation. Just chill out.

The main difference is most sardines are used for sustenance, rather than purely being killed to satisfy someone's bloodlust.

while I sympathize with the position, I would like to point out that sardines are not high on the "sustenance" list. sardines tend to fall somewhere on the "tasty snack" list, "tasty snacks" being only mildly different from the satisfaction of other more immediately violent "tastes".

considering that many people live perfectly healthy sans any animal product whatsoever, i find it difficult to distinguish between sport-hunting and food-hunting based on the simple convention that the latter is consumed. with the additional consideration that most sport-hunters do eat some part of their kills, the distinction becomes even slimmer. the argument could even be made that individual hunting is less cruel than commercial meat production because the only creatures killed are the creatures selected by the hunter--fewer "innocent bystanders" are caught up in the effort.

don't forget that the hunting population (in the US anyways) is also a substantial force in support of the conservation of our natural resources. most hunters like the "wilderness" aspects of hunting and for their own reasons oppose the encroachment of civilization and its various pollutions. commercial meat-producers don't care for the wilderness at all because it impedes the money-making process.

while i personally am not too keen on hunting, i do recognize the Hemmingway-style appeal of deep sea fishing and the struggle between man and "monster". in that vein of thought, nice catch. my compliments to the taxidermist.

Oh God, the horror. Someone on a fish forum, who is obviously more likely to care about the wellbeing of fish than your average fisherman, caught a shark and killed it humanely. The humanity, God the humanity!

You can't save the world. A bullet to the head is just about the kindest death a shark could ask for, as opposed to the alternatives offered it in the sea, like becoming ill and being picked at by its fellow sea dwellers while still alive. Everything dies, the best you can hope for is that it be as quick and painless as possible, no matter how it comes.

Back on topic, that's something I'd like to have hanging on the wall of my tiny room, wildly out of proportion with the surroundings! I think it would nicely compliment my 80 gallon that takes up half a wall and completely blocks a window.

EDIT: Typo.

Actually i don't eat fish at all, so my thoughts are still valid...

In my view its the same as shooting a bear and hanging its head on the wall, i think its barbaric and wrong.

Totally agree with you...

 Go onto a fishermans forum if you want to brag about catching a shark... not on here though please.

Did you eat any of the shark or was it just killed to hang on your wall?

You should just have got one of thoes 'Billy Bass' things, they look just a real as your shark but I'll bet Big Steve doesnt sing 'Moon River' when you walk past him!

surely a photo would suffice as a testiment to this struggle rather can killing a worthy adversary?

People, I think its cruel but you can't blame him, at first he asked a simple question and people asked to see the photo of the shark, its unfair on him to take any blame as he is just like any other hunting sportsman, he enjoys it. I eat fish, but I like fish. It's the way life goes and if you have any bad thoughts or comments, I suggest you keep them to yourself.

main difference being this is a forum for appreciating live fish, not one someone has killed one...that would be a hunting forum.im sure mrsmurf would get lots of pats on the back there..but not here and not by me.

ive fished quite a lot...never sharks that big..big cat fish though..i would never fish for an animal i would have to kill when i catch it, or to kill it if i wasnt going to eat it..ive killed mackrel but ate it afterwards.
unless you were going to tell me how tasty the shark was because you were hungry im not impressed.

i would much more appreciate the shark swimming, and breathing.

and as for the "man against beast", thats an ego trip...the shark didnt ask for it, it didnt look for it. thats only benefiting you there can only be one loser, the shark..thats not sportsmanship thats pointless butchery.

this is only MY opinion, however i would be very dissapointed if there wern't more people like me thinking this here.

I know my rant is completely off subject but i feel strongly about things like this, so please dont take this to heart..just my 2cents
im aware that "flaming" isnt allowed but im not having a go, just my strong opinion on the matter.
Danny

I don't care for sharks much, but to kill them for fun and mount them on walls, is sad in my opion.
