can someone tell me what this chap is...

fish8kl.jpg

they seem to spend a fair bit of their time 'floating' around almost as if dead ... then they spring into action again :hyper:

Ginge, sadly many shops sell them as juveniles for something like £2.99 - so just about anyone can easily pick such a fish up. In my opinion the should simply be banned from lfs outright.

thanks for the feedback guys ... i rescued these a couple of months back (2 of) from a tank that was being decommissioned. they're currently around 3" long. having read the background of this fish it's now obvious i can't keep them forever, having said that i'm happy enough for them to remain in my tank until they reach no more than 6", at that point i'll donate them to lfs. how long until they reach that size, are we talking weeks or months?

thanks again for the ID.

The problem with donating them to the LFS is that they're likely to ust sell them on again to other unsuitable owners, and that's f they'll take them off your hands at all. You've got a better chance of them taking them when they're small, so if you want to do that, I'd recommend doing it ASAP.

Another option would be to phone around larger public aquaria? Other than that I don't know what to suggest, but I wish you the best of luck :)

the ironic part to this is the iridescent shark is also know as an "ID" shark. Lol. we have Id'd your ID....

i have one, they are not very acrive untill the night time.... if it is floating around like it is almost dead... it may be (because mine doesn't) check you stats... maybe you just have a strange one though! lol!

This may sound cold hearted, but unless you have a friend out there with a 600+ gallon aquarium, the best thing to do would probably be to euthanize them.

Carl

PS I've heard clove oil works well

Euthanaise a fish for no reason?!?!

Not until alot of work has been put into rehoming him. Its so and so's fault for buying before researching.

yes, it has been said that they can grow up to 3 FT long!!!!! but also that the mojority of them reach aboit a foot. so it could be a huge fish..... although mine has been in a 30 gallon long for a while now and (with lots of room) his growing has slowed down and he's only about 4-5 inches so far... although i plan on buying a 50-100 gallon incase he gets any bigger any faster.....

Easy champ, it's just a fish. As important as they are to us they are just fish, and in some cases euthanizing a fish is the best plan for them otherwise they will drag on for months or years in a tank to small for them suffering the entire time.

The problem witjh ID's is that hardly anyone has a tank big enough to house them permanently. This is from someone with a 570 liter tank. My friend has a tank twice this size, and this would still only be a temporary solution, and that's assuming they would wnat to take it.

Edit - even if he only reaches a foot a 100 gallon is not exactly roomy for him. I would get a 180gal minimum if you choose to keep him, and even then you'll be screwed if he grows to 1.5feet and beyond.

yes that is true....... i got him by accident when my brothers friend moved.... either i took him or he died.... what can i say....

well if you decide you dont want him, good luck catching him. I had two before and those suckers are quick.

Probably not many that only get to a foot (the reason you rarely see anyone with bigger ones is because they've got wise and got shut), and those that do remain small do so because they're stunted in a tank too small for them, making them prone to disease and shortening their lifespan. Don't think it's worth it personally myself, and I have to agree that euthanasia is a better option than palming them off on other unsuspecting or idiotic owners.
