What do you guys think ?

a lot of people think keeping fish in an aquarium is cruel in general, regardless of how big the tank is, its not a natural environment, keeping fish in an aquarium is really the equivalent of you living your entire life in your bedroom with no tv or electronics or anything to do, and twice a...

    Tank weight for second floor

it "should" be fine, when you can its always best to place an aquarium against a load bearing wall, also place the tank so it runs perpendicular to the floor beams, not parallel to them

What is going on with the temperature?

just leave the heater unplugged and stop worrying about it, putting cold water in to lower the temp is worse for the fish

    Question on "Culling"

i have been breeding all kinds of tropical fish for over 20 years.....the first thing i tell people who want to start breeding fish is that you can not look at your fry as pets, you have to look at them as inventory, and you have to have no heart when it comes to culling, and you must cull them...

    Quarantine Tank Set up

i would keep that sponge filter running in your main tank, only move it to the quarantine tank when you need to use that tank, leave the quarantine tank empty unless you need to use it, when you need it, fill it half way with water from your main tank, the other half new water, then move...

    Feeding Tips

i have many tanks with over 100 fish.....never worry about every fish eating, thats just crazy, if they are hungry enough they will get the food, tropical fish can easily go a week or more without being fed, they will find leftover scraps on the bottom, or peck at algae, quit worrying so much
  20. mikey11

    Tank Temp

i don't know why people get so concerned over the temp of their tanks, 99% of tropical fish will be just fine in a tank anywhere from 22C to 32C there is nothing wrong with 26C as long as the temp changes are gradual its fine, its much worse and far more stressful on the fish if you do a...
  21. mikey11

    Struggling with this heat!

nothing, unplug your heater, leave the tank light off, and stop worrying.....thats it fish are very tolerant to a wide temp range as long as the change is gradual, adding cool water will do more harm then good, the death of your fish was not cause by warm water

    Possible short fin molly pregnancy?

chances are most of them will be, unless you have LOTS of plants, and i mean 80% of the tank covered in plants, live bearers are notorious for eating their own fry within seconds of birth,

    Fry

no matter how well you grind up flakes, they will still be far too big for fry of any kind, for the best health and growth its best to hatch live brine shrimp for ANY fry, live brine shrimp is a must for egg laying fish fry....its the only thing they will touch from my experience, for live...

  26. mikey11

    Water temperature fluctuation

Do pet stores buy fish from customers

not really.... chain stores get their fish so cheap it just really isnt worth the hassle of taking other peoples fish
  30. mikey11

Do pet stores buy fish from customers

depends what variety and what quality they are, stores normally only want perfect fish.....that would probably only be about 25% of the fish an average home breeder would raise....so you would need to cull the bad ones ruthlessly
  31. mikey11

Do pet stores buy fish from customers

independent stores might....chain stores probably wouldn't even take them for free what kinds of fish are you talking about?

1 red belly piranha in an un cycled tank

i disagree..... piranha would be eating live fish in the wild....that is what they should be fed in captivity, it is their instinct to eat live fish, that shouldn't be taken away from them, what you have stated above is pure myth, in my experience it is very difficult to get piranha to eat...

Checking Tank mates and Tank capacity

if they are talking about a bala shark, they can get to 12 inches or more, it wouldn't matter though because the arrowana would eventually eat everything else in the tank
