  might not be anything to do with this make of filter,but when removing the lid make sure all valves controlling the flow of water are open first this will solve the problem if it's anything like my Eheim canister.

when cleaning air can become slightly trapped.   try giving a gentle shake when up and running again doing this gently a few times helps. also make sure you are priming the canister correctly before switching unit back on.

i run bio home filter media from them and haven't had a single problem so i rate it highly.   no need to run carbon in a healthy running tank so that's fine to remove.   try to have the bio home at the last stage of filtration so that all the muck and mess is removed as much as possible before...

i run eheim and cant fault it.   do you run filter floss (very fine media) as this can clog quickly reducing flow?   when starting a new filter you need to get as much filter media as possible from old one and drop it into new and you're ready to go or you can set up another one running i guess...

as already said bacteria will grow everywhere in there ....do not run under tap water!   rinse gently in aquarium water only otherwise you're looking at running into big problems

it's difficult when having to take a life , especially using force , but if that equals less pain and quicker i'd have to take that option , instead of something thats slow and possibly painful.
