I'd go with your test kit and observations of your fish .. many tables I have seen are based on assumptions that do not apply to real tanks ... for example a concentration of acids other then carbonic will invalidate the table ... and there are many other acids in a aquarium besides Carbonic...

I too have had diatoms show up in my new tank ... If you have a microscope take some time and have a look .. they have skeletons made of glass forming all kinds of interesting patterns and so require a large amount of Silica in the water ... some have suggested new tanks may have excess silica...

Hi Wolf ... I'm not a fish expert but here is my guestimate ... The behavior you described is hard to explain by ammonia and / or nitrite toxicity ... in that case the fish would be hanging near the surface and breathing fast ... I guess that the Cichlids are putting out a bit more waste then...

I don't know what to think :rolleyes: but if you are going to do it you should get an Oxygen meter to test your set ups ability to remove O2 .... then you don't have to guess :) I'm thinking of getting the same size tank !! Good Day ... B)

I don't know anything about the genetics of fish color .. but in some mammals color is not dictated by a simple dominant / recessive gene model ... but models involving a set of genes and different results from different combinations ... Good Day ... B)

I simply run a thermometer under the water until I get the temp matching the tank ... tank temp changes less then .5 degrees. I add my water to the back of the filter to help even things out. It's takes about a minute or two so why not be percise ?? It can't hurt ... According to the "Handbook...

I'd agree with Steel ... water changes will dilute the Ich population ... why could you not add meds to the new water to maintain medication levels ?? Good Day ...

I'd be more concerned about the Nitrite and Ammonia levels then the nitrates ... The gasping can indeed be a response to Nitrite or Ammonia and water changes alone can help this ... my local shop has water with 160 ppm Nitrates ?? I'd be leary about adding a bunch of stuff to the water ...

Wow .. sounds like a bad attack ...looking at the big picture .. What treatment did you follow ? If there are no fish in the tank it should not be a big deal to clear the tank of Ich .. they need fish to survive as far as I know ... in my own limited experience it can take repeated treatment...

Perhaps -_- then humic acids are what you need to add .. humic acids are the end product of natural breakdown of organic materials ... plant and even animal material .. humic acids will lower and buffer the pH as well. Good Day .... B)
