Still seeing fin rot in my tank

It's difficult to see fin rot in the photos, but it's good to see ammonia at 0. Do you know what your nitrate is, ideally it should be below 10ppm, and shouldn't be higher than 20. As for pH, could you take a small sample of your tap water (not tank water) and keep it overnight (say 10 hours) in...

    Wild betta biotope ideas

The big leech you see in the video can suck water buffalo blood. You can usually see them latched on the buffalos grazing in the water from 20-30m away. I’m told that if you apply kerosene to your legs the leeches will keep away from you, but it’s not a good idea to apply chemical to your skin...

    Wild betta biotope ideas

I have seen tropical orchids grown indoors and I’ve seen fish tanks, but you’ve taken it up to the next level but having Phalaenopsis blooming using humidity from a fish tank. Well done! Just curious, what is the temperature of your room?

A nice tank, and welcome. Just wondering how long you have the rams in there, around 2 years as well? I don't have much success with them.

    New Here!

154 ppm is about 8.6 dGH (degree of General Hardness). I’d say that moderately hard water. If you know the pH then many members here would suggest the fish that’ll suit your water. Starting an aquarium is a slow process if we want to get it right. If it’s rushed, it could become a very...

    Syphon recommendations?

My tank is also 200L, but it sits on a sturdy table which makes water change easy. I use Fluval Gravel VAC to remove water and a 10L bucket to add water to the tank. The attached photo shows what I use, and the bucket is solely used for the aquarium - not for mixing fertiliser for gardening or...

    Rainbow shark tank size

Despite what I’ve read about rainbow sharks, my shark’s tank mates are cichlids: Electric Yellow, Yellow Tail Acei, Pearl of Likoma, Eureka Red Peacock. The cichlids chase one another occasionally but leave the shark alone. The shark leave the cichlids alone, swims among the cichlids and is...

    New fish keeper needing help

As mentioned by Rocky998, the best place to start is finding out the water parameters, pH and GH (and KH too). This is because some fish are soft water fish, some are hard water (high GH & pH). If we keep the fish in the wrong water, the fish keeping experience will quickly turn into a...

    First week water results

Just like to mention that fish poop will get trapped in the gravel. The thicker a layer of gravel, the more time is needed to syphon it out at water change - just something to be aware of.

    New fish keeper

Welcome to the forum. I have sand at the rear of my tank and gravel at the front. My yoyo loach prefers the gravel section as it searches for food trapped in the substrate. I hardly see it in the sand area. You mentioned slate in post #1. Just thought you may want to check if it affects your pH...

    Fin rot

I’d keep up the water change. Many people advocate large water change, 50 to 70%. For a 75 US Gal (approx 300 litres), 50 – 70% would mean 150 to 200L of water change. For someone who does manual water change, that would mean carrying 15 to 20 of 10 litre buckets, not something I’d look forward...

    Fin rot

From your previous posts you seem to have intermittent problem with fin rot. Did you successfully treat it in the past? The ammonia is 0.25ppm. While that alone is unlikely to be the cause of fin rot, it’s a concern as your tank is 5 months old so ammonia should be zero. This ammonia suggests...

Do I need to start from scratch

Your tank may not be fully cycled given that there were no fish in it for quite a while, although it shouldn't take long to get it to fully cycled again as all your plants are there. If I were you, I'd do a fish in cycle, a few fish at a time.

How much water changes should I do on a pond

Yes, it’s a bit cooler here in West Gippsland, approx 100km east of Melb. A few nights each winter the temp drops to zero, even goldfish wouldn’t like it much. When the sun hits during the day it climbs to well over 20C very quickly – that couldn’t be healthy for the fish. Water in your ponds...

How much water changes should I do on a pond

    Burping filter?

    Fin Rot

Thanks for the test results. The tests were for water parameters; pH, ammonia, nitrite nitrate, etc., not for bacteria causing the infection. You'd need a vet to test for bacteria, a very expensive exercise. I’d just show the store the photo(s), no need to bring in the fish causing undue...

    Fin Rot

When you do water tests, you do Not test for bacteria in the water. Bacterial infection can be managed by doing regular and frequent water change. If you sucessfully treat this infection, you'll need to keep up with water change to prevent same infection fron happening again.

    Fin Rot

That looks like a pretty bad bacterial infection. Water change on a regular basis and correct water temperature could help prevent infection from taking hold. Salt treatment could help in mild fin rot, but this case looks quite severe to me. There’re products available to treat bacterial...

1 of my Tiger Barbs turned pale

The first thing that came to mind was that the fish could be harassed by others. If that’s not the case and it's otherwise healthy, swims with others and not hiding in a corner, then it’s a bit of mystery. I had some tiger barbs before in 100L, 75cm long tank, but don’t have them anymore as...

Thanks again. The gouramis are very small to be building bubble nest. They didn't start the problem but will pick at anything they see as food, in the case the early stage of fin rots. Vallis aquarium

Have you measured the length of the leaves to see how long they are? I have some val which are around 1.2m long so are still manageable, no need to trim them just yet. I've been told that if you trim it, the affected leaves will die - any truth to that?

Buying my first aquarium (second hand)

You'd pay around $150 for a new tank of that volume without a stand, so that's good value assuming there aren't too many scratches. As has been suggested, make sure there are no leaks. I see that there's good support for the tank around the edges but none in the centre, so I'd be reluctant to...
