Would you know what this is?
Doesn’t appear to be white spot/ich. Some are white dots, others look like parasites about 1mm in length.
It doesn’t get any better or worse in the past 3-4 weeks. The fish is too active and eats too much to be infected by white spot. There's no flashing either.

No response on the angelfish, so here's another one, a female blue ram.
The white spot in the photos seems to start from under a scale. The photos were taken at least 3 weeks ago, and whatever it is doesn’t seem to progress much since. Columnaris has been suggested, though I’m not convinced that it is. Any opinions?

Sorry that you have not gotten a useful response. :(

I can't say that I have an answer as to possible illness as in like 55 years I've never had an illness issue other than a minor case of Ich.

Is it possible that what you show could actually be physical injuries? Did you happen to add a new decoration or something that might have a sharp edge that could cause injury?

In my opinion, the reason nobody can respond is the pictures aren’t showing anyone an obvious illness. What is shows is that the fish is having a problem, but what is anyone’s guess as illnesses in fish can be difficult to diagnose in the first place.

Are these fish in the same tank? If so, it is possible they have the same thing. You may consider treating the entire tank, once you decide the course of action.

You say it looks like a 1mm parasite. Worm/thread like? Could be flukes. They’re often in the gills but can be on the body also.

The fish both look as if they have many small white spots. Could be tiny white debris floating in your water or actually be on the fish. It is hard to tell. It doesn’t appear to be ich or velvet, but it could be tiny injuries that are becoming infected (fungal?).

Are your fish eating? You don’t mention any symptom other than what is shown in the picture. There is much more to your fishes health than just appearance.

Here are some general options for different types of fish illness.

Parasitic (External) - Prazipro, Ich X
Parasitic (Internal)- General Cure, Seachem Metroplex, SeaChem Focus (To Bind)
Fungal - API Fungal CureBacterialAPI-Furan 2, Seachem Sulfaplex

The photos of one were from last month. How long have you had the fish? Could you inquire from whom you obtained these fish if they had any specific issue back when you acquired them? If they had a known issue and resolved it that could help you set on the right track for treatment.

Nobody was ignoring you, there is just no way to respond with any confidence, just our best guesses, but we do wish you the best of luck.

I just saw this topic and looking at those photos of that angel, I can not really see a clear illness on those fish. But yes, it could also be just an injury. The spot on the ram doesn't look the same as that of the angel to me.

Thanks for your response and suggestions.

To answer the questions, both fish were in a 55G tank for the past 6-7 months. They have since been placed in separate quarantine tanks for the past 3-4 weeks. The 55G tank has live plants, river gravel and sand, nothing sharp that could have caused injury. The angel and ram don’t have the same illness.

I realised that it’d be hard to tell what the problems were from the photos, the reason why I had them in different tanks for observation and did not post sooner.

The angelfish didn’t show any sign of distress, it still doesn’t. I only realised the problem when the croaking gouramis started picking at it. As much as I don’t like the gouramis’ behaviour, I now think they give an early warning sign. The angel then developed minor fin rots while in the Q tank but that has now been treated and I’m starting to think whatever on its body might be associated with fin rots. I’ll leave it in the Q tank for a few more days before releasing back into the main tank. If the gouramis leave it alone, I’ll consider all is good.

The ram is a different story. I’ve lost 2 BRs and 1 Bolivian ram in the past 5 months, they have similar disease. It started with either some kind blister under a single scale, or what looks like a small bump on the head. It then developed into ulcer within a week to 10 days, and the fish went downhill from there very quickly. This female is different, as whatever disease it is, it remains fairly stable for the past 3 weeks or so.

Apart from the rams I haven’t lost any other fish in the 55G tank since I had it up and running.

Anyway, unless someone has rams which developed similar problem it would not be possible to offer any opinion. I didn’t feel that my posts were being ignored by members, if the message in my posts suggest otherwise, that was not my intention.

I’d better stop here. Thank you all again.

I just noticed that you hadn’t received a reply and I didn’t want you to think your inquiry was going unnoticed. I just think nobody knew how to respond with what limited info was provided.

Now, you say “gouramis”, so could it be that the gouramis have built a bubble nest and were nipping and attacking the angelfish which created the sores where you find the white areas?

I’ve had rams in the past but never had any luck with them for some reason. They never lived very long and seemed healthy and fine until they were not.

Sorry I raise angels and would have responded except I have never encountered what you pointed out and I didn't want to parrot something I looked up online and wasn't sure of. The reason I use this site is to get and give feedback with people who have had personal experiences in whatever topic is covered.

Does bring up a thought that might be helpful. What if we had a button in the various likes that indicate that you have read the request for help but you don't know how. Might be better than just never responding. Or maybe we just send a note "Read your post but don't know how to help you"

I just found this one. The angel is hard. Because of the marble patterning, I can't tell if it's just a colour thing or if it has a texture.

The ram may be a lesion in its early stages, but it is also hard to see.

I hauled out my diseases book, with all the lovely pictures of the things that afflict fish, but it didn't give any leads.

Whenever I have a question or suspicion about the fish I keep, I change water first and think about it after. Really, all you can do is look carefully. Maybe look up images of Oodinium sp for the angel, though I don't think it's 'velvet'. It's in the right place, but. It's more a question of you monitoring. Some things just go away with water quality.

Thanks again. The gouramis are very small to be building bubble nest. They didn't start the problem but will pick at anything they see as food, in the case the early stage of fin rots. I'm fairly confident this angel will be OK, but only if the other 3 angels (not yet adult size) don't see it as an intruder whe I release it back into the main tank.

Yes, that button could be helpful.
