there are lots of cichlids from Mexico. a picture is needed to ID the fish. with it being a CA region i wouldnt risk it with smaller fish as most are quite aggressive.

the humbug catfish is an excellent snail eater and even at its fully grown size it wont touch tetras etc. its a very beautifull and calm catfish to have in a tank that wont bother anything.

aureus will display a more yellow colouration compared to the elliotis pink/red and blue colours. they look a bit skinny be sure to feed them plenty......

nicaragua cichlid or rainbow cichlid :unsure: female nics usualy have a blue sheen to the face and males have quite patterned fins which makes me think rainbows too but the black marking is right for nics. the rainbow cichlid markings are usually not as neat as these and are more rough looking...
