    How I'm Building My Refugium.

What kind of algae do you plan on using? I ask because most of the macro algae need some disrupting.

    Sterilizing A Tank

I agree. A good rinse to get rid of dust and settle materials that might have landed in it and you're good to go.

    How I'm Building My Refugium.

Excellent. I've found that a good and well maintained fuge is a great benefit. The only thing I would (will) change with my new one is that I won't put sand in it. That turned out to just be more trouble than it was worth. I will use large pieces of live rock to increase filtration and caulerpa...

Newborn Pineapple Wag Swordtails Please Help!

I'm sure I'm not the only one to think of it but I feel it's original. I used to breed heavily so came up with the idea. I liked it because it's easy to remove when you are done with it and inexpensive.

Newborn Pineapple Wag Swordtails Please Help!

You won't need to feed them anything tonight so don't worry about that part. You have a couple of choices about shelter though. Because the adults will eat the fry you will need to provide protection for them if they are to survive the night. You can do this by putting them in a separate tank...

    Is This Media Good?

The only concern is that removing them will remove that bacteria from the sorority tank so generally I recommend just taking one out at a time.

    Water's Smell

I will second what fluttermoth has said. Do a little detective work to narrow down the problem then you can fix it. A tank should smell pleasant. A good marine tank smells like the ocean and a good freshwater tank smells like the stream.

    Is This Media Good?

From you post it sounds like they were in a working tank, so if that's the case they should be usable as media for another tank.    The bacteria need something to feed on. So for sponges to be live biological filtration they need to have been in an environment that promotes the growth of...

Using a pouch of activated carbon will help reduce this smell.

    I Thought I'd Drop By

I think that would be great. I think it would help people to make something similar. Planted tank journals would be the right forum for the job. Thanks for doing that (when you get a chance with exams)!

    I Thought I'd Drop By

That's good news for people just starting in the hobby, or who are on a limited budget of money or time...it's a tank they could pull off and have look really nice.

    I Thought I'd Drop By

Thanks for posting those. The tank has a look I really like. It's also the kind of tank I believe makes fish feel very secure and unstressed. I had a similar tank with dwarf puffers in it and the tall plants allowed them to create territories and stay out of each others way.    Lovely shots!

    I Thought I'd Drop By

Well, this isn't a photography forum so you'll be forgiven if the saturation if off a bit. No, seriously, there are few things I find more inspiring to my own designs and plans that pictures of other people's tanks so I try to get them, hunt them down, google them or whatever when I get a chance.

Thinking Of Going Salty For The First Time

There is no need for external filtration. That said, most of them produce nitrates which are bad for corals. It is actually the job of a filter to do that, convert ammonia and nitrite into nitrate. But nitrate is bad for corals so the Berlin Method uses the live rock to house bacteria which are...

Thinking Of Going Salty For The First Time

For checking salt I recommend a refractometer.    You will need about 1 pound per gallon of live rock. Here's an article on how to pick quality live rock.    I highly recommend sand over crushed coral. The main reason is that crushed coral tends to hold detritus which leads to higher phosphates...

That makes me think the problem isn't with the forum itself. If it was then going directly here would still create the issue.

I think this fish is a real stunner.      The blog post on Advanced Aquarist doesn't have a lot of information but it's worth a read. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/a-kullanderi

    Parasite - Never Say Never...

Wow, that's crazy! I've had a few instances of Marine parasites but in FW have been without so I know much more about the marine versions than the fresh.    Can you tell me, do they scatter their eggs or lay them in the fish?

Dr. Tims Waste Away And Bettas?

True...The answer is a philosophical one. I find them unnecessary so don't use them. But I have the temperament needed to see cyano while I take care of it and not stress. Some want it gone now and then will make changes. I like going slow and natural with my tanks whenever possible.but that's...

    Nano Reef Tank

I had the 29 gallon BioCube. There's really only one BioCube. The rest are cube shaped tanks. BioCube is the brand name. It's the one made by Coralife.    The differences are subtle but to me important. I've owned both the BioCube and the JBJ and found the BioCube to be more well made and solid...

Lets Talk Ich For A Bit

I am aware of that and it's a very important part of how I deal with ich. I can't say I recommend my method to people but it's worked for me very well.    It amounts to husbandry really. I make sure the fish eats, the water is clean, and that they do not become stressed then I let them deal with...
