Hi everyone,

I have some small pieces of manzanita wood soaking in some water. It has been in there for 4 days and I have changed the water twice. However, when I went to change the water today (the 2nd time) I noticed bubbles on the surface of the water and a sour smell coming from the wood and the Water. Is this normal or is there something wrong with the wood?

Thanks!

Are there lots of tannins coming out of the wood?

Excess tannins can cause a sour smell; like brewed tea (if that means anything to a Canadian!).

Using a pouch of activated carbon will help reduce this smell.

Yes, there were quite a bit of tannins in the water during the 2nd water change, it was a medium-dark amber colour. Good to know that, that could be the cause. lol I'm not sure about the brewed tea smell xD.
