i knew i wouldn't have much time for heavy maintenance on the tank, so when I adapted the existing setup i designed it around minimal maintanence and maximum looks. Easy to clean filters, easy to trim plants. I'll admit i've never cleaned the gravel in a proper fashion. I remove large clumps of debris, but leaves are left to return to the gravel. No ill effects at all. It's able to maintain a perfect balance with water changes of 15/15/15/40 on a 4 week rotation. It looked awfully barren at first but as the plants started to spread it gradually became better and better.
