    The Bird

It's been two years... I don't remember what they're doing. :) Chances are they were watching one of my friends partake in drunken antics.... would explain why they're laughing ;)

    Live rock...

Theoretically, with uncured live rock in there, your tank shouldn't be done cycling yet. If you add enough cured LR, it can handle the bioload and get rid of all the ammonia caused by die-off on the uncured stuff, however. Still... your tank isn't truly cycled yet, and you could have ammonia...

    When they shed...

Most of the time you're not gonna find the shells when things molt. It's not gonna harm anything to leave them in. Heck, if saltwater shrimp are anything like the Amano shrimp that I have in my FW tank..... they'll turn around and eat the stuff. The first time I saw my amano shrimp molt, I...

Set up a mini-bow 5 nano last night

IT'S GONE!@! THE BLOODY THING IS GONE!!!!!!!!! AGGGGGGGGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, it looks like the mystery coral will remain forever a mystery, because just as mysteriously as it appeared and lived, it has mysteriously disappeared :( I came home today and had a package in the mail with the...

    5 gallon nano-saltwater

I'm of the exact opposite belief. If you're setting up a tank, don't skimp on the live rock. Live rock is your primary filtration method... it IS necessary. You don't need all the fancy skimmers, sumps, overflow boxes, refugiums, calcium reactors, etc..... the only things you TRULY need for a...

help Green algea taking over reef tank?

And you're gonna have to load up your filter on Phosban, Rowaphos, or something similar to take out the phosphates that are already in there. Pull the long strands of algae off by hand and get a load of snails to eat the shorter stuff.

help Green algea taking over reef tank?

Biggest question..... did you use reverse osmosis water or tap water? If you used tap water.... you probably have tons of phosphates and silicates, which that algae will use as food. As for what to do about it..... I'd love to tell you, but I'm still fighting that same problem :(

    Musing about corals

I'm new to the hobby, so I can't comment on how things used to be..... but I will agree that at most stores, SPS corals are overtaking everything else, and I don't know why. A lot of them look like fake decorations.... beautiful, but not quite "real". Still, people are buying them up. The...

    The Bird

And finally, I'm not too fond of this one, but other people seem to like it. The guy in the foreground is my brother-in-law, and the guy behind him..... I have no clue who he is, somebody that was staying in the house nextdoor.

    The Bird

Here's last year's favorite picture. Again, not sure what possessed me to take it... just saw something, turned my camera, snapped, and kept going. It wasn't until I got back and looked at it that it really struck me. I still can't even put my finger on why I like it.... but I LOVE this picture.

    The Bird

I don't know what type of bird this is.... I'm not even sure what posessed me to take the picture, but it turned out to be my favorite picture from this year's vacation to Myrtle Beach. It needs a little bit of touchup and color correction, but I think it's gonna end up printed and framed once...

Set up a mini-bow 5 nano last night

Alright, time for more pictures! I added some Xenia today. Beyond that, I've switched out the crappy hang in tank filter for a Fluval 204 with the skimmer attachment, which you should be able to see in the pics. And, the red thing is looking more and more like a mushroom. Still not entirely...

    New Xenia

Well now that the ammonia and nitrite is gone, I decided it was about time to start adding to the tank. I was atthe LFS today to look around and possibly get a peppermint shrimp and some snails, and the tanks in the place are ALWAYS covered in Xenia stuck to the back of the reef tanks. There...

    Live rock...

We all expect polyps, dusters, worms, etc on live rock.... occasionally hitchiking animals like crabs/shrimp, etc.... it's all a part of the deal. If the store you go too keeps their live rock in a tank with fish and sells it that way... too bad... that's a freebie too. Most people pick out LR...

    Pics of my mantis shrimp

BOOOOO!!!!!! I hate insects too, but I think shrimp and similar critters are amazing. That one picture does look like a demon coming to devour your soul, however ;) Pretty cool in that "scourge of the reef tank" kind of way :D

    5 gallon nano-saltwater

If you want to do a 5g, you're gonna want a big sump/canister filter to go on it to raise the overall water volume a bit. So far, mine has been fairly stable, with just the standard pH fluctuations that a new tank goes through. Ammonia and nitrite have disappeared, but when I first put the...

    Horseshoe crab?

Quite simply... a BIG tank. Horseshoe crabs can get up to about 2 feet long and between 8-12 inches across. They're not small animals by any means. It might take a while for them to reach their big sizes.... but they will.

    Changing Filter Media

I'm running a Fluval 204 canister on my little 5g reef with much the same idea as Navarre. I've pulled out all the foam on the one side of it, and left the media baskets in on the other as a place to put carbon and phosphate remover. I also filled the top basket with floss to catch all the...

    :( :( :( :( :(

Isn't Hammer Coral almost the same thing as Frogspawn and Torch coral? It's a very beautiful coral, but it's aggressive, and you have to keep it away from other things. And at night, it extends its sweeper tentacles and will sting anything nearby. It looks good, but unless you have lots of...

There's only one thing in there that looks plastic. The plants in the front right corner of the 30g look too uniform... looks fake. The rest look real.

    Post your Car!

Amen sister. I thought Altezza lights were a plague that only infested the US and Canada, but apparently it has spread across the Atlantic too :( Other than the taillights, which I have to agree with Crystal on... that's a NICE VW. They're not very popular around here though.... especially...

Yeah, I forgot, there are a very few floating around.... VERY few. They're imported by a company called Sun International and equipped with a Honda B18C, I think. http://www.suninternational-usa.com/

What would I need for a nano?

If you're gonna get a nano-cube, find a nano-cube deluxe. It's 48w and fan cooled, so they went ahead and put more power and some cooling in the hood, which is what people were gutting the hood to do anyway. I think they run about $120-140 or so.

Set up a mini-bow 5 nano last night

I ordered a little thing of Joe's Juice to get rid of the aiptasia. I'm a bit leary of using boiling water in a tank this small as I know even a bit will raise the water temp. As a side note, I also changed out the filter last night. I took out that crappy Whisper hang in filter and put on a...

crystal: You could always do what some of the guys in the Subaru club have.... take a GC8 bodystyle car and drop in the drivetrain from a wrecked WRX/STI..... or put a turbo kit on the 2.5 that's in the car. There was one for sale not to long ago by the owner of the Subaru forum.... probably...

You don't see any, yet. They've been promising us the Elise for about 3 years now, and it's STILL not available in the US. There's still debate as to what state we'll get the Elise in, too. Some say they're gonna take it from its purist sports car state with none of the frills, and...

    first saltwater tank setup

I used Oxyclean. It's an oxidizer that won't stick around... basically becomes peroxide when you add water to it. My 20g marine tank was used.... and it formerly held guppies. There were a few nasty spots on it, and Oxyclean cleaned it right up. Essentially.... put a few inches of water...

    first saltwater tank setup

One thing I'll add that I'm pretty sure Navarre will agree with...... leave the anemones in the ocean. Your clown fish doesn't need an anemone to host in, and they can wreak a lot of havoc on a small SW tank with their tentacles and their habits of moving around. Search for "sarcophyton" and...

what could go in a 5 gal?

With the 20w in my mini-bow, I've been able to grow java ferns, crypts, pygmy chain sword, alternanthera, myriophyllum, and water sprite. The only thing I haven't had luck with was dwarf hair grass, and I think that's because the other stuff blocked the light to the hair grass. Edit: pics...

what could go in a 5 gal?

Yes, the bulbs I'm telling you WILL fit in those sockets. The Coralife 20w bulbs fit perfectly in a Mini-bow 5. The All-Glass bulb is only 10 watts. Discomafia: it says the Colormax is ideal for freshwater aquariums... which it is, being 6500k. The 50/50 Daylight/Actinic bulb will also grow...

what could go in a 5 gal?

I have a Mini-bow 5 (2 of them actually) and the Coralife 20w bulbs work perfectly. They barely fit.... but barely is good enough :) By ALL means, replace that crap incandescant bulb with a Coralife 20w. Even the 50/50 bulb designed for marine tanks grows plants 100x better than the...

    Unusual little fish

Well you're doing the right thing Navarre, no matter how much it sucks :( Just make sure you take all the pictures you can while you have him because they're not a very well documented species, certainly not in the aquarium!

Set up a mini-bow 5 nano last night

Well as an update, apparently the live rock is uncured, or at most partially cured. I tested the ammonia last night, and it's up around 1ppm.... not a terrible amount, but more than I'd like to see. Apparently it's not too much for aiptasia, as there are 3 pieces I've seen. *adds Joe's Juice...

    Small Nano

Well mine will have a fish in it on a temporary basis, but it evetually will be coral/inverts only. Here's what I've got so far.... All-Glass Aquarium Mini-bow 5 (which despite the company's name is made of plastic :P) Hood has foil in it as a makeshift reflector.... working quite well It...

    Unusual little fish

How did you manage to get your hands on one of those? I looked it up on Google, and they're on the threatened species lists.... usually meaning that import/export of them is prohibited! :o Either way, that's an awesome little critter! Make sure you take tons of pictures of that guy, as it...

Set up a mini-bow 5 nano last night

Yeah, I know sponges die if exposed to air. This rock was in a bag with enough water to keep part of it submerged and the rest at least exposed to humid air.... and then I had it out of the tank once after I put it in initially, too. But a sponge is motionless, right? This thing seems to...
