I'm of the exact opposite belief. If you're setting up a tank, don't skimp on the live rock. Live rock is your primary filtration method... it IS necessary. You don't need all the fancy skimmers, sumps, overflow boxes, refugiums, calcium reactors, etc..... the only things you TRULY need for a...

And you're gonna have to load up your filter on Phosban, Rowaphos, or something similar to take out the phosphates that are already in there. Pull the long strands of algae off by hand and get a load of snails to eat the shorter stuff.

Biggest question..... did you use reverse osmosis water or tap water? If you used tap water.... you probably have tons of phosphates and silicates, which that algae will use as food. As for what to do about it..... I'd love to tell you, but I'm still fighting that same problem :(

Quite simply... a BIG tank. Horseshoe crabs can get up to about 2 feet long and between 8-12 inches across. They're not small animals by any means. It might take a while for them to reach their big sizes.... but they will.

If you're gonna get a nano-cube, find a nano-cube deluxe. It's 48w and fan cooled, so they went ahead and put more power and some cooling in the hood, which is what people were gutting the hood to do anyway. I think they run about $120-140 or so.

I used Oxyclean. It's an oxidizer that won't stick around... basically becomes peroxide when you add water to it. My 20g marine tank was used.... and it formerly held guppies. There were a few nasty spots on it, and Oxyclean cleaned it right up. Essentially.... put a few inches of water...
