    Three spot gourami

I was reading big yellow three spots causing trouble on another thread, and wanted to ask, for possible future reference, what sort of tankmates have people had success with them? I have read a lot of advice that they are disruptive so always avoided them in consideration. But every time I see...

I just re-read the entire to remind myself what started all this off. Just wanted to point out how amused I was that while quoting several Seriously Fish articles throughout thread, the original veiled criticism was about Pea Puffers, where you chose not to link Seriously Fish because Circus...

    Beginner planter tank…

It's not glutaraldehyde though. That's the whole point I was trying to make. I am sure glutaraldehyde is the main raw material in it's manufacture, but the active ingredient is an isomeric polymer which means biochemically it looks a lot different. If any study has actually proved it to be...

    well here goes

If your plants are growing well be aware that the plants will snag the ammonia and so don't expect the nitrite numbers to match the article... but the fact you have nitrite means the cycle is going to plan. You know you are cycled when the ammonia is gone in 24hrs with no sign of nitrite. It's...

In nature P. axelrodi is considered a virtually annual fish with individuals over a year old rarely-encountered, although it can live considerably longer in aquaria. Copy and pasted from the Seriously Fish article, it also discusses changes in the season hydrological cycle and the largish...

I was just commenting it's not a perfect metaphor None that I can recall, do you have a reference to show me how tetras live long happy lives in the wild after multiplying their numbers during seasonal floods after the floods recede leaving likely polluted puddles and a lucky remnant that might...

Is this a good stocking list for my planted 10 gallon?

Ember tetra are nano, they are less than 2cm, and seriously fish suggests 18 inch tank, so 10 gallons is fine unless its a square one. You could probably fit several more of these if you wanted to, quite a lot more if you are prepared to risk ignoring the stocking rules guidelines.

    poop-nado 2nd time :(

If you changed water you probably dislodged crud inside the tank too, on cleaning day I find it usually takes several hours at least for everything to clear up. I just tell myself all the gunk that gets thrown out in the old water is that much less gunk in the system.

    Beginner planter tank…

Well I read that link, polycycloglutaracetal, is a polymerised isomer, not glutaraldehyde itself, that's why it has a different name. Shapes of molecules are more important to biology than chemical formulae. And the safety sheet also mentions no harm to fish, only to certain kinds of plants...

Ok, I didn't misunderstand you.... The leopard incidentley does change its spots when living in dark environments, its melanistic form is more successful, though I admit that proves your point more than mine. Leopards are ridiculously common compared to the other big cats because they are...

    Beginner planter tank…

Seachem claims the active ingredient is similar to gluteraldehyde but not the same. While they could be lying (are they legally allowed to?), this sounds to me similar to the "soy boys" phenomenon on the internet. Soy contains what are labelled as "phyto-estrogens". This has resulted in soy...

    Yoyos and Barbs Eating Veggies

I couldn't find the article I remember reading about that wild C.aenus are observed in their thousands living over a massive variety of substrates from mud to flat slate, in a fairly large range of pH, gH and temperature. I did find a few articles describing the massive seasonal changes to...

    Yoyos and Barbs Eating Veggies

PFK magazine usually has an article where an explorer/collector will go to a natural with nets and cameras. They nearly always comment during the article how surprised they are at the variety of habitats various fish are found in when compared to the received wisdom of what hobbyists say they need.

Mollies wiggling in one corner of the tank (one specific corner)(pls help)

If there is enough oxygen in the water, overstocking can theoretically be safely done, but you are either condemning the fish to high nitrates or yourself to much more frequent water changes than you would otherwise need. And if we are honest many people in USA and UK are no better than what...

A Few Questions on My New Planted Tank

I just use an elastic band - but glue would look more invisible - and I assume straight on the rhizome, those pots can usually split into two or three plants, more if your prepared to cut through the rhizome. If your wood is knobbly enough you can sometimes get away with just wedging it in.

How many plants for silent cycle?

As much plants as you can while still looking nice to you and leaving at least some water for fish to swim in if they that sort of fish. But realistically you are starting with small plants, you will cut and replant stems as you go along, so when you stock with fish start gradually and keep...

    Flake food and cyanobactria.

If I feed too many flakes I get an oily film on the surface. My worry is that these organics are coming straight from the flakes and never even have a chance to create organics in the form of fish poo. Which seems inefficient and overall would lead to extra organics. Does anyone have thoughts...

    Centrepiece fish

See I would regard the rams you already have as centrepiece, but I would be really interested in other ideas people would have, that presumebley are bigger and better. The challenge is something that won't upset the Rams or decide the Rams are a threat. You probably don't have the space for...

Yes sorry that was what I was getting at - I should have been more clear..... the rhizome being buried in soggy glass wool is probably just as harmful as being buried in sand. Seriously regretting decision to let snails breed...

Nerites are nice, I miss mine (they hitched a lift on the internal filter one cleaning day and eventually dried out and died crawling around the carpet), but it could be argued the sterile eggs are way more ugly than an explosion of cute little pest snail babies.

    Cloudy water - opinions please?

I usually find tannins result in clear but coloured water, but I expect that might depend exactly how many tannins. Will free living algae last forever if the nutrients can't be used up on plants or surface living algae? I never test phosphate so I have no idea if 0.25 is excessive or not. Did...
