Starting My New African Cichlid Tank

I use API test kits myself and they seem to do the job but ive heard many people have problems with them and there not accurate enough.. Does sound like its fluctuating a little going from dark to light back to dark purple again which sounds a little odd i think, usually after a couple...

Starting My New African Cichlid Tank

So the ammonia is dropping which is good but don't know why your nitrites aren't dropping by now, not even a little??.. I think its just a longer cycle than most, as i know you are wanting he fish but if it is taking slightly longer id rather it do that and be right for the fish once...

    How To Grow Algae?

Thanks, Yeah it should grow fine on ocean rock. The male maybe guarding his territory or building a breeding nest ready to breed. Is he showing good colour and looking healthy?? Spirulina flake is fine and i would only give them an algae wafer every so often, NLS (new life spectrum) is a great...

Starting My New African Cichlid Tank

You don't have any live plants that a reasonably tough to throw in there do you? So are your nitrites and ammonia staying at a consistent level or not?? Are they dropping at all?

Going To Go The African Route

What filtration you going to be using? The Astatotilapia latifasciata do blend quite well with malawi's even though they are from separate lake's but as far as i know they are pretty hard to come by at the moment (decent ones that is) A nice group of saulosi will be fine i recon and as Rifty...

    How To Grow Algae?

Your water parameter's are what matter the most, aslong as all your water readings match that of the lake the algae that grows in the tank will be similar to what grows in the lake. I add lake salts to my water which add's all the right supplements for the fish, so the algae that grows is...

Suggest A Malawi List For My 120L

6 to 8ft would be a brilliant size mate i have 225G 6ft myself and i love it. Some Saulosi i think would be the best option and then when you do upgrade you can have all the other larger species your wanting to keep. :good:

    Lighting For Tanganyika

Yeah thats fine :) Daylight or natural lighting will look best i think, the blue bulbs do no justice for an African ciclid tank i think. :good:

Suggest A Malawi List For My 120L

Ohh yeah, you are pretty much fully stocked i think, you could add a few more labs to your current 2 though. Is there any other species that you like the look of for the 120 Mate??

Suggest A Malawi List For My 120L

The labs i think will get too large for a 120L, surely your not fully stocked in your main tank?? Some Pseudotropheus Saulosi or some cynotilapia species could work in a tank that size :good:

    Purigen

Not sure, in my 405's its in the top and in the Fx5 its in the middle, seems to be the exact same outcome in all the filters and they all need recharging at a similar time.
  24. Malawi MaD

    Purigen

I would say it wouldn't matter? I added mine to any of the baskets in my fluval FX5 and 405, As long as your not removing anything thats beneficial for the filter id put the purigen anywhere in the filter.

    Which Should I Go For?

Yeah but like you say Oscars geesss these guys are messy i have 4 now (still waiting to pass them on) they just spit food everywhere/stir the sand up move the wood about, generally just making a mess lol
  26. Malawi MaD

    Which Should I Go For?

Yeah that's the best thing to do, especially with Malawi can never have enough filtration.

Starting My New African Cichlid Tank

Not sure about leaving the lights of during a cycle(never heard of that myself) but im guessing the lights wouldnt be left on anyway as there is nothing in the tank to look at? Like i say the algae will come with time, depending if you want it or not??
  28. Malawi MaD

    Which Should I Go For?

    Chillids

Venting is the best way to tell the sex of cichlid's as its guaranteed to tell the sex of your fish, but the easiest way to get a rough idea is the males have egg spots on the anal fin and sometimes on the dorsal plus they have pointy anal and dorsal fins as well as long pelvic fins. Some...
