Purigen

I would say it wouldn't matter? I added mine to any of the baskets in my fluval FX5 and 405, As long as your not removing anything thats beneficial for the filter id put the purigen anywhere in the filter.

Not saying the post above is wrong but I have been advised to use it in the top tray, reason being that all the other media can do its job first, then the Purigen can work its own magic just before the water goes back into your tank which makes sence to me.

Not sure, in my 405's its in the top and in the Fx5 its in the middle, seems to be the exact same outcome in all the filters and they all need recharging at a similar time.

i've got two bags of the stuff in my top tray (bottom layer), i've cut away a chunk of black sponge to make it fit.

Im not overly sold on the stuff, but it is discolouring so its doing something.....

found a trapped bioball in one of the trays intake holes today, water would have been going through but rather slowly, worth mentioning as something to make sure you dont do yourselves! Fortunately i run two of the 1200s so didnt effect much.

Interesting product, first i have heard of it.

What is the difference between this and activated carbon? will it remove meds or ferts from the water?

Purigen should always be last in the direction of flow (i.e. furthest away from the filter inlet). Purigen removes ammonia, so if you put it at the filter inlet you rob the bacteria of ammonia and you grow a smaller colony. Not a problem until you have to remove the Purigen for some reason and then the colony isn't sufficient to cope with your bioload.

Purigen doesn't remove Ammonia, it removes the organic waste, that leads to ammonia. It doesn't directly remove the ammonia. So in essence it can go anywhere in your filter. :good:

Yes you're quite right. But it should still go in as the last thing in the flow path to minimise clogging.
