Does changing the arrangement of plants/rocks/etc. in a tank cause stress on your fish?

I rearranged the driftwood in my sunfish tank over the weekend, and the sunny is pouting in the corner. But he’ll still come out for live insects.

Any suggestions for low light plants that grow tall?

I’m really just trying to fill in some blank space in a hexagonal tank, and give the fish some structure.

    Job ideas

You might take a look at doing sales. Lots of companies need people to sell over the phone, or make appointments for outside salespeople. It would require some mental energy, being nice to people, and of course, lots of being told “no”. But you could work at your own pace, and earn good commissions.

I don’t think it’s typical, but it’s not necessarily uncommon, either.

Help with Female Dwarf albino african clawed frog

The sudden change in water temperature is what triggered the egg laying. Since you don’t have a male, they are infertile and should be removed.

The worst trade names for fish.

Being more familiar with herp names, there is one that I absolutely despise: pac-man frog. There is no such thing as a “pac-man” frog. Back in the early 90’s, captive bred horned frogs of the genus Ceratophrys were beginning to show up in pet stores. These frogs have short, fat bodies and big...

    Guppies vs Endler

Unfortunately, hybridization of some species is common in the herp hobby as well, to the degree that definite pure individuals of certain species can be difficult to obtain, unless they are captured in the wild.

What’s going on with my turtle?

Injury? Fungus? Discoloration? Can’t really tell much from the photo.

Once again... Found something totally awesome in the back yard.

Those are Eastern garter snakes. They are harmless, and eat primarily cold blooded prey such as amphibians, fish, and earthworms. They will also occasionally prey on small birds and rodents. That top specimen is absolutely stunning. I’ve never seen one like that before.

African Dwarf Frogs Holding Each Other

My first guess woul be that while the male appears to be ready, perhaps the female is not yet ready to produce eggs.

    What will cut hardwood driftwood?

Sporting goods stores often sell folding saws that will fit in your pocket, like a knife. One of those would probably work well for what you’re doing.

    Would anyone be interested.....

I would take a look at it, if I’m not under too much pressure to do so quickly. I used to keep this species when I was younger. They’re still one of my favorite snakes.

    Tell me something funny

The other day, I was walking down the street, when this slightly chubby lady rides past me on her bike. I yelled “Cow!” She turned around and gave me the bird. Then she ran into the cow.

Found a baby box turtle in our yard!!! Adorable

The turtle in the photos is a box turtle, not a snapping turtle. Also, if the story about the alligator snapping turtle took place in North Carolina, then you probably saw a common snapper, as gator snappers don’t occur there. Sorry to be such a downer.

    Crazy Stories Thread

Here’s my crazy story- Last week, my wife and I headed west for a vacation; Yellowstone, the Tetons, etc. On Tuesday night, we were having supper at some fancy place in Jackson, when a crown popped off my tooth. My tooth was hurting, so the next morning, I called every dentist in Jackson...

    axolotls!

I agree that only one axolotl be kept in a 20 gallon. Although people often keep them together, I find that they really do better individually. They tend to nip at each other. If you must keep fish with an axolotl, I recommend White Cloud Mountain minnows. They are more of a cool water fish, and...

Anybody try mealworms for your fish?

I regularly feed superworms (a larger relative of the meal worm) to my native fish, and they eat them well. The exoskeleton contains a lot of chitin, and can be hard to digest, so I feed freshly moulted worms when I can.

What amazing things have you seen your pet or someone else's pet do?

A while back, I was feeding my pink tongue skinks. I use solo cup lids as food dishes, and set them onto a piece of cork bark in the skinks cages. On this particular occasion, one of them was lounging on a planter a few inches away. When I looked in his cage a few minutes later, I saw that he...

Proposed USA regulations ending fish keeping

History on the point of a spade

A while back, while walking my dog, I found a laptop bag in the ditch along the river. I retrieved it, figuring that it was probably full of drug money. Unfortunately, it contained only a quarter and a couple of paper clips. In my previous house, I was digging up a section of my lawn to build a...

WHAT'S THE MOST QUESTIONABLE EXPERIENCE YOU'VE HAD AT A PET SHOP / AQUARIUM?

When I was young and idealistic, whenever I went in to a pet shop that sold reptiles and amphibians, I would take it upon myself to politely critique their care and housing, and offer suggestions. It almost never went how I wanted it to. Most store owners and employees would get defensive, or...

    A good day...

I spend a lot of time outdoors too, and I’m always looking for reptiles and amphibians, occasionally bringing enclosure decor home. Last week, while looking for wood turtles in northern Minnesota, I found a fantastic piece of driftwood stuck in a culvert. It looks like a dragon looking over its...

    Sunfish and Natives

I’ve kept sunfish in aquariums from time to time- here’s what I’ve found. If kept with another fish, a sunfish will definitely take charge. However, if kept with a group of fish, they will usually go to a corner and sulk. If you put them in a pond with koi, I think that the koi will be ok, but...

    New axolotl just got here

I think it should be noted that the axolotl is mostly extinct in captivity, as well. The vast majority of axolotls in captivity are actually tiger salamander/ axolotl hybrids. I understand that there are still a few pure axolotls in Europe, though.

How Would You Describe Yourself ?

I’m a very casual hobbyist. Although I’ve been keeping fish off and on for over fifty years (I grew up catching my own aquarium fish), I’ve never had more than three tanks going at one time. I know less than most newbies. My main hobby is amphibians and reptiles.

    My turtle has problems...

First of all, the turtle should be in a proper enclosure- always- and not free roaming in the house. It also sounds like the turtle has a respiratory issue, and needs to be seen by a vet. It probably needs antibiotics. It isn't eating because it isn't being kept properly, and/or is ill. I think...
