Unfortunately, hybridization of some species is common in the herp hobby as well, to the degree that definite pure individuals of certain species can be difficult to obtain, unless they are captured in the wild.

Those are Eastern garter snakes. They are harmless, and eat primarily cold blooded prey such as amphibians, fish, and earthworms. They will also occasionally prey on small birds and rodents. That top specimen is absolutely stunning. I’ve never seen one like that before.

My first guess woul be that while the male appears to be ready, perhaps the female is not yet ready to produce eggs.

I think it should be noted that the axolotl is mostly extinct in captivity, as well. The vast majority of axolotls in captivity are actually tiger salamander/ axolotl hybrids. I understand that there are still a few pure axolotls in Europe, though.
