New cichlids are here and I’m in love

Well of course no one likes a bully and it is the bully that does the killing ;)

A few random pictures from the past week or so

    1) a. sp Blutkehl; (2) very young L600 (pleco); (3) blue/black form of l. dorsigera sold as l. curviceps (4) fish sold as m. egregius - definitely a mesonauta but this genus is not well described.

    Dwarf Ciclids advice

Two excellent genus though there are some Latacara i'm not as fond of as others and Dicrossus have their own aggression issues. Mini-tigers ;)

Nope, twice is too many times… not buying those type heaters again…

The warning should probably not be ignored as if the unit gets too hot it will burn out faster. The key isn't angle but as you mentioned current flowing over the unit.

    Dwarf Ciclids advice

There are many dwarf cichilds (such as rams which are in the genus Mikrogeophagus ) which are not in the genus apistogramma.

But they are not a dwarf cichlid ;)

    Dwarf Ciclids advice

So you are talking about the beauty of the fish and not the behavior. I personally prefer gold rams when it comes to just looks; there are some fantastic looking wild caught borelli but very few are exported these days due to brazil policies. In terms of behavior I've been very happy with my...

apistogramma a genus; some are interesting; some not (imho). You should talk about a specific species.

A small town that is anything that is tranquil ;) At least they leave the dither fish alone; more than i can say for the wc cockatoo.

    Dwarf Ciclids advice

I have 3 females with my male (a. cf ortega) in a 65 (48 long 16 wide); all three appear to be spawning; all three have warned the male off and he is now regulated to a small area in the left front corner while the females do their thing.

    Dwarf Ciclids advice

Gary again i'm going to have to disagree with you - in this case strongly as it depends heavily on the species. For example apistogramma ortegai are clearly harem breeders. The key aspect isn't having more females but rather the female becomes very aggressive to the male and the male does not...

    Dwarf Ciclids advice

Just be aware that some dwarf cichild are polgyamous and the rules change for those species as the female becomes extremely aggressive torwards the male while brooding.

    Sword plants doing poorly

    Depends on species of plants.

    Dwarf Ciclids advice

For blue rams i recommend a 29 or 20 long; buy from a reliable breeder (not a store) that can sell a pair. Do not keep other fishes in there with them - esp cory and cardinals; you might be able to get away with ember tetra or green neon tetra (fishes that won't disturb them or go after the frys...

    Sword plants doing poorly

The first plant is in emersed form and those leaves will decay to feed the submersed leaves which should soon form. Given this I presume these are new plants; if that is the case the 2nd plant existing leaves will decay as the plant adjust to new growing conditions. Remember plants work on the...

Depends on if it was made 20 years ago or today ;)

Nope, twice is too many times… not buying those type heaters again…

In all of my aquariums 'cept the 10; they are behind matten filters where fishes can't reach them. In the 10 it is against the glass and I've not noticed any issue (been setup for 4 years); however I did have an upside down cat that burned itself on a marine-land glass heater.

Why Hobbiest find Discus fish Demanding!

freeze dried black worms are readily available; though not sure about india (freeze dried is not frozen). I soak them in water while i feed the other fishes and then hand feed them to the discus to ensure the smallest one get a good chunk.

Nope, twice is too many times… not buying those type heaters again…

there is a generic problem that most plastics decay when submersed in water for a long period of time (this include suction cups and common tubing - silicon or otherwise). That's the nature of the game. I will admit there is some very high end plastics that will hold up better - esp thosed...

Why Hobbiest find Discus fish Demanding!

I'd try freeze dried black worms (or live blackworms if you have access to them). Discus can be picky eaters but i've not been able to get mine to eat shrimp based foods at all. I've been wanting to get them off of black worms since I feel it is not the healthiest diet but right now they are too...

    Hamster advice

Unlike hamsters mouses are incredibly smart. there is a video someone ( I think a scientist who was studying mouses) posted. Basically the mouses learned what drawer had food; but they knew that the food moved if the person knew they had been there; so they created this routine to steal some of...

Couple of questions about hatching brine shrimp

That looks like a knock off of this which is of course a few dollar less expensive and include enough shrimp eggs for 20 years: https://amazon.com/Brine-Shrimp-Hatchery-Dish-Separately/dp/B08KRZT369/ I actually have one of these - it is ok for a few fishes but gets tedious for larger...

    Seriouslyfish.com

I've found quite a few errors in seriouslyfish profiles esp around prefer temp and behavior. I'm not sure if this is due to typo, different catch locations for some species or just simply wrong data. Having said that it is a decent site. For me i usually cross check 2 or 3 places - hope they...

    High quality cichlid pellets

Fluval has a bottom feader bug bite which is a mix of greens (peas and similar) and soldier fly. I've not had any issues feeding dry food to wc fishes including cherry chocolate gourami (which i was amazed when they went after dry food immediately). Having said that sometime it can take a while...

    Old Pleco

However if you really want a single fish for the rest of your life I'd go with a group of clown loaches in a 200 ;) - of course if you have a 2000 gallon aquarium you could get away with a single pacu.

A few random pictures from the past week or so

Those guppies that go low risk aggression but most stay up in the top where there is a heavy plant layer. a. borelli is a bottom dwelling fish as are most species of apistogramma.

A few random pictures from the past week or so

Just the male and female; tank mates were mostly guppies. If the tank is shallow and has lots of floor space you might be ok with 2 males and several females but you have to scape it correctly to provide each male and female hiding places and territory boundaries. Borelli are one of the few...
