If my brother is mad at me he takes it out on fish

Hi, if I lived a bit closer I,de come over and sort him out for you! I don,t know about where you are but here, killing pet fish is a crime. I would contact the RSPCA and tell them whats happening. I,m sure they will follow it up as they take these matters very seriously whatever the size of...

My companion of 12 years is gone

My best friend and companion for 12 years left me yesterday. My beautiful germain shepherd dog had to be put down because of a bladder problem that was inoperatable. I will sorely miss her more than anything in the world for she was the most intelligent caring dog I have ever known. Everday I...

Hundreds of little particle things in the water!

I don,t think a one gal is too small for a air stone. You only need a small air pump so it shouldn,t be too expensive. One trick is to let the plant leaves catch the bubbles and hold them underwater thereby helping to disolve the oxygen into the water. I,m sure your betta would like it too.

    Summer is here

Hi Juggernaut, my tanks is at 27c (82f) now. Its going to to go up more as the week goes on. I was thinking around 32c might be a realistic figure to try to keep it under.

    What lighting to use?

Hi mtdewlover, the thing to remember here is no matter what lighting system you choose, you are aiming at 2-3 watts per gallon for good plant growth (this is a minimum since you want to inject CO2). So around 120-150watts should surfice. I,m assuming your tank is around 4-5 feet long? You could...

    Nutrafin Natural Plant System

Hi mtdewlover, theres many ways to put CO2 into a tank all with pros and cons. Sure the fermentation runs out and you have to replace the mixture, no big deal. Actually if you get two canisters and run them into a single tube then into the reactor you can have constant pressure all the time by...

    Summer is here

Thanks Guys, I have seen the chiller units for fishtanks but they are like over $1500 bucks so thats not an option. CFC, I like your idea because I was thinking of swapping to an external canister filter anyway. The method you described sounds the most viable to me, I have everything to do that...

    Cichlid question......

Hi, sorry to hear another one died. Are there any visable signs of parasite or fungus on the dead fish? If not it sounds like they are being poisoned by something. Anything you might have added to the tank just before they got sick? Decoration etc?

Hundreds of little particle things in the water!

Hi, I responded to your other post but I see what the problem is now. You say no filter and no heater? Well two things bacteria need to grow is warmth and oxygen. Without at least a filter or airstone you wont be able to grow bacteria. I suggest either a small sponge filter or the very least an...

    Summer is here

Ok, I,m more or less thinking out loud here. The summer has come apon us with a great rate of knots as it normally does. Today the temp has gone to 35c and my tank water temp has crept up to 27-28c. The next few days the temp is going up to 38-40c and I think the water will go up to about...

    Gettin very worried... opinions?

Hi Julie, I have four cherry barbs too. One of mine (female) is always looking bloated too. Don,t know why but shes always been that way and it dosen,t seem to bother her. The other three males are all normal. ( I think its a she because she is a lot duller in color than the others and I read...

    Beneficial Bacteria

Hi FBG, I like your description of the "bacteria wars" sounds like a new george lucas film :D As Gad says, the only way to grow bacteria is to go through a cycle. However I have been reading lots of people are having great success with a bacteria supplement called bio-spira. Some people have...

Sorry to hear about your swordtail. My silvershark jumped out of my tank again last night. Lucky for him I,ve been there both times. Mind you, thats the only time he can jump out when I,m doing maintainence. I would have thought he figured out already the floor is a hard dry place!

    CO2 or no CO2?

Hi, CO2 is always going to benefit a planted tank no matter what the fish are however because cichlids need a high PH you have to be very carefull about the levels of CO2 you inject. This is a very good article about planted cichlid tanks, its worth a read.planted mbuna tank

    Penguin 330 Bio-Wheel

I,ve read they are one of the best for growing bacteria and many people swear by them, but if you plan on a planted tank don,t use them. As WMB says they can clog with plant matter and the other thing is that they are bad for letting CO2 escape.

Yes, thats right. They have a high PAR rating (which means high photosenthysis rating, good for plants) but are very dull to view fish with.

    lighting

Hi Noop, they could have been using the fluros specially designed to bring out the colours of the fish. They typically have a good CRI which means colors look normal and they are also fairly high in the spectrum (10000k-18000k) which makes them look a bright blue colour to simulate tropical sun...

    Misinformed

In one word, OXYGEN. I would say the oxygen demmands on the tank is too high. Something I noticed when we changed our pond configuration to make it more oxygenated, fish started growing much more quickly. I remember reading somewhere a guy grew a 3 foot koi in a 5 foot tank. The tank didn,t...

    New Fresh Water tank

Hi A.G, first off stay away from any LFS that has fish "scratching". Theres no need to bring their problems home. I,m sure you will source out a good clean healthy LFS nearby. Quarantining fish is always a good idea when introducing to the community but if its your first fish it dosen,t matter...

    Nitrite Troubles

Hi Velvet, it looks like your tank is nearing the end of the cycle going by your water readings. I wouldn,t remove your plants as they will feed on the nitrates. The nitrites and nitrates are still too high though so keep up the partial WC,s.

Did I do the right thing?

Hi Kerry, the original medicine you gave them sounds like malachite green. Its a dye, thats why the water turned green. What concerns me is why your fish got sick in the first place. Have you done any water tests? The filter not running is going to kill the good bacteria that was growing on the...

    Driftwood turning water brown

Hi guys, a few days ago I put a nice big piece of driftwood in my tank. I scrubbed it in the bath (the only place it would fit) and waited for it to dry (dechlorinate) and then put it in the tank. Now the water has turned tea colour and the gravel is starting to stain. Will the brown tannins...
