 right so i now know i can get ammonia... but what do i do?

do i have to add anything else with this ammonia?, will it just break down by its self? do i have to add fish food? and how long will it take adding ammonia?

lastly how much roughly do the test kists cost? im in the uk.

I can answer the last question about cost. I have Ammonia, NitrIte and NitrAte testers - all seperate - which cost about £6.50 each. The pH tester is cheaper.

You can get a "starter" pack of test kits, but the one's I've seen don't include NitrAte.

As for the Ammonia question, I don't believe so, but the guru's on this site will tell you much better than I can (I take it you're cycling)....

Rightie, soz bout the late reply was at work before, home now :) I'm also in the UK and pay between £6-8 depending on what kits you get. If you want to speed up the cycling process try and get some gravel or filter sponges from an established tank (if you don't know anyone with a tank already running some lfs's will give you some gravel to take home). Failing that it'll still work with it just take a week or so longer. Normally fishless cycling takes 10days-2 weeks instead of 3 months with fish (thats rough times sometimes can take a lil bit long).

If you're adding ammonia you won't need to add the fishfood.

Wait a minute!!! :hyper: Stop!

I may be able to save you some time here. You said that your grandmother has goldfish, right? (Do you know anyone else who has fish, too?)

If you tell me about it, like the size of the tank, if there is gravel, a filter, etc. I can tell you if you can make a clone of it that will save you a great deal of trouble and anxiety. If it is possible to do this, you will also be able to, safely, put a few fish in right away. I need to have the info about your grandmother's tank to be able to judge whether this can be done without doing any harm to her tank.

You will still need to get test kits, although you can skip the one for ph, and you will need to read the pinned posts so that you have an understanding of the role of bacteria in the process of cycling.

Also, please tell me what equipment you have for the tank. I mean things such as the filter and heater. -_-

The best advice I can give you right now is to stay calm. You are about to establish a tank that will be the basis for a hobby that you can continue for the rest of your life, if you so wish. A week or two more or less, at this point, will not make much difference in the long run.

right, in my tank atm i have a superther100 heater, aquael internal filter (got pump as well built into it apparently, i have gravel and a few plants (adding more tommorow) one giant rock with holes in (cost me 15 squid dangnammit!) and a few odd pebbles...thats about it.

cheers for the info guys, no my aunt has goldfish she aint got tropical.... and sadly no i dont know anyone with tropical fish :(

also i asked this before but still dont know, how many gallons would my tank be as its 2ft by 1??????? its bugging me...

If the footprint is 24" x 12", then chances are you've got one of these two:

24" x 12" x 16" high -- 20 gallon 'high'
24" x 12" x 20" high -- 25 gallon

edit: (those are US gallons, by the way)
