Looking at your second picture I reckon there should be a short length of standing pipe attached to the lip of the other hole to act as an overflow if the outlet hole got blocked and the water level rose.

Bubbler's/air stones are pretty and that's about all. As the bubbles break surface the ripples increase the water's surface area so marginally increase the transference of oxygen from the atmosphere into the water. Little or no oxygen goes from the bubbles into the water as they are not there...

Hi, if you are doing the fishless cycle, add and wait ammonia way then remove the carbon balls and replace with ceramic noodles (tubes) or more sponge. Carbon is not required for a fishless cycle method.
