It's not just the sharpness of the substrate that effect Cory and the like. With gravel food etc. gets between the stones and rots pretty quick offering bacterial infection to probing barbels. With sand the food etc. does not penetrate so much as it is all eaten quickly.

The AquaOnes have a two part canopy. One part houses the trickle filter and the other the light unit. Sometimes the two parts vibrate together. Have you tried separating them. Also just a thought, are you sure it's not the filter power head vibrating? I suggested these things as my 850 used to...

Yes, most bottom feeders perfer a sand substrate. Again, if you had sand I would suggest Goby. There are loads to choose from and they are great fun

Try the pond dept of your LFS. You can get a packet of sponge filter media cheaply then just cut to size with sissors or elec carving knife. :good:

Look, just measure the amount of space for the 2 tubes. Stick a bit of masking tape where you need to cut and draw a cut line on it. Using a small junior hacksaw gently cut. The plastic is not brittle so it wont crack. Remove tape and finish with a fine grade sandpaper. What a fuss :rolleyes...

My guess is your tank looks a little more subtle blue in real life than in the photo, yes? If so it's because your camera is on automatic therefore over-exposing due to being dark and not using the flash. To get a more true to life blue then you need to set your camera to manual and...

Not sure what lighting is required for them. Perhaps ask that question over in the New World Cichlid section?
