Does Lexan As A Tank Divider Leech Bisphenol A Into The Water?

What you said makes a lot of sense. I think I'll put the lexan in with some test fish with the carbon removed for a couple weeks and see if they have any abnormal reaction to it. Thanks for your insight. :)

Does Lexan As A Tank Divider Leech Bisphenol A Into The Water?

I've been cutting some lexan sheets into dividers for my betta tank and have noticed that there is an odor released from cutting it. It kinda melts from the heat generated by my dremel too. Is it safe to use lexan as tank dividers? Does it leech toxic chemicals into the water? :/

    Marine Land Bio-wheel Pro 60?

Yeah I think they discontinued it probably because most people bought their fully integrated Penguin/Emperor filters. They also have the biowheel + canister Magnum system which is still very popular, but since you already have a canister you just want the biowheel.

    How To Get Clear Water

A bacterial bloom can happen anytime there is over feeding or lots of organics in the water even in a cycled tank. Filter floss can clear water of bacterial blooms.

    How To Get Clear Water

Why do you automatically assume the tank is going through a mini-cycle? The cloudiness could be ANYtHING including a bacterial bloom.

    Question About Filtration System

I advocate the use of carbon for freshwater tanks that contain fish etc. not ones that contain plants only or saltwater tankfs. I'm not a blind carbon nut like those blind no-carbon nuts. Finally plant only tanks tend to have very clean water since the plants act as a filter. I don't claim to be...

    Ammonia In Tap Water?

You have again completely ignored what i talked about in the other thread. AMMO LOCK DOES NOT REMOVE AMMONIA THEREFORE IT DOES NOT STARVE THE AMMONIA CONSUMING BACTERIA. If your tap contains high levels of ammonia then you may need to use Ammo Lock for water changes especially large ones like...

    Question About Filtration System

Why would you need carbon to remove protein in a plant only tank? Plant only tanks shouldn't contain protein. Protein is onlly an issue if you have fish, fish food, etc. in the tank.

    My First Beta

For plants start with some Java Fern and some Java Moss. For gravel gets ones that are round very small pebbles so that food doesn't fall into the crevices. For filter get a cheap HOB with flow control since it's easer to service than internal ones. Also it doesn't heat the water like internal...

    Question About Filtration System

I have a planted tank and I use carbon but it's for the fish that live in the planted tank. If it's plant only then I wouldn't use carbon.

    Are Yellow Bettas Common?

Yeah I'm beginning to think it's not septicemia and normal. I just looked up some yellow bettas on aquabid and they have similar visible blood vessels too. Anyway I'm already into the 3rd day of a 5 day treatment so I'll just wait until it's complete. So far the blood vessels don't seem to have...

    Question About Filtration System

True however tap water doesn't contain all the right trace elements for freshwater fish either and also contains other elements that fish don't need. I remember reading about the break down of trace elements of saltwater but never really heard anything about it for freshwater. From that I assume...

What Do You Think Of This Thing?

Fish traps are much less stressful because they are always submerged. Tthey don't touch the air. Not only that put trying to cat fish in a tank with lots of liverock or live plants can be VERY stressful for the other fish especially when the fish you're trying to catch hides in those rocks...

    Question About Filtration System

I would like to point out that some people keep perpetuating the myth that carbon is only good for removing medications. Carbon is useful for removing a variety of things that the bacteria doesn't remove. Yes frequent water changes also removes the same things that carbon does, but sometimes I...

    Question About Filtration System

What you're saying again doesn't make any sense because you do not understand how things actually work. I'm sorry if that offends you, but I'm not going to let someone make bold claims against my post with incorrectly understood information. RO systems don't just use carbon. They also need to...

    Question About Filtration System

RO system use multistage carbon. The carbon works just the same as it does in a fish tank. Separating the good from bad water is the same as "soaking up". http://www.freedrinkingwater.com/ro-45-detail.htm NSF KX Extruded Carbon Block 5 micron 10" —gets rid of unpleasant chlorine, tastes and...

    Question About Filtration System

Ah makes a whole lot of sense now. The sponge is already included in the filter and the carbon pouch doesn't need cutting since it has a clip.

    Question About Filtration System

It only dumps the stuff back if you leave it in longer than you're supposed to. Anyway do what fishdawg mentioned, make a cut near the top of the carbon/floss cartridge and dump the carbon out.

If carbon was as bad as some people claim, salt water aquariusts wouldn't be using RO water which also uses carbon.

    Question About Filtration System

Yes cut up a piece of sponge and put it on the return flow side of the carbon (the side where the water falls into the tank). Leave it like that for a couple of weeks then remove/replaced the carbon. When using certain medications you may need to remove the carbon.

Individual Tank Bettas Vs Community Tank Bettas?

From my own experience it really depends on the individual personalities of the betta. Some bettas are more agressive than others and they'll flare at almost anything. I think if you have a betta that is really agressive compared to other bettas it should have it's own tank. Constantly flaring...

    Question About Filtration System

Carbon doesn't suck since it doesn't harm the water. It actually cleans the water by absorbing all kinds of organics, odors, colors, and harmful toxins from the water. Anyway you can easily fit a sponge into that filter to grow the bacteria. Any LFS will have replacement sponges that you can cut...

    Aquaclear Vs. Penguin

The amount of nitrifying bacteria depends as much on surface area for the bacteria to adhere to as how much O2 is available to those bacteria. Your standard wet/dry filters with an overflow & sump work as well as they do not just because of exposure to O2, but because of the much larger surface...

    Fishless Cycling And Ammonia Out?

I agree about not adding a bunch of chemicals into a tank. During a fishless cycle you do not need or want to use stuff like Ammo Lock. Ammo Lock should only be used when there is a need to detoxify large amounts of ammonia while there are fish or other living animals in the tank.

What Temperature Do You Try To Keep Your Tank At?

    Fishless Cycling And Ammonia Out?

What you said doesn't make any sense. Tap water contains chlorine and/or chloramine. When you use declorinaters the chloramine (if it is present) is broken down into chlorine and ammonia. At that point the chlorine is removed by the dechlorinater leaving the TOXIC ammonia. If the tank is already...

    Aquaclear Vs. Penguin

    Fishless Cycling And Ammonia Out?

Huh? Ammo Lock and chlorine has no relation to one another. Huh? So you're saying it's better to leave the chloramines alone for it to poison the fish instead? Huh? The "natural" way is to let the tap water sit so the chlorine can evaporate. Unfortunately it does nothing to remove chloramines.
