    Wild Betta Falx

again, these are a treat! wild betta's are heavily under-rated in favour of fancy b. splendens IMO!

    Wild Betta Imbellis

judging from your spelling of "color" i'm guessing you're not in the UK though? still, my search for wild betta's goes on! can't wait to see the males with mature colours

    Strange Deaths

Ph shouldn't be an issue, i doubt these are wild caught so they're much hardier and can handle varying water quality, plus they can't read so have no idea what the Ph should be in their tank ;) even if your Ph is drastically different from where you bought them, acclimatising them slowly will...

    Bettas In Demand?

i think it all depends on your reason for breeding them. if you plan on making money you might have trouble, if it's as a personal project then you need to find somewhere that will take the fry. i know you've had a bit of grief off other people, and that's not my intention. its just like...

    Laos Biotope

i had a background on it and i thought it looked rubbish! i was tempted to put a black background on, but i like the open look to it. the plants should hide all the equipment once they've grown out

    My Malawi Tank

i love malawi tanks, this is a classic example! and it looks much bigger than a Rio180 hahaha, juwel have a tendancy of over rating their tanks, i worked out my Rio240 only holds about 180L, 200L at the very most (lots of decor though)

    Bettas In Demand?

if you're planning on breeding to make some money you really need to think about setting it up as a proper business, and be able to ship all over the place. there might be a very low demand for betta's in general in your area, so selling them could be a problem. if you do decide to do it as a...

    Tanks With White Gravel

i'm not a fan of white gravel or sand TBH. i feel my gravel is a bit too light. as ianho said, it makes a lot of fish uneasy, the glare takes the colour out of the fish, and makes it harder to take good photos. that's just my opinion though

    Is It Important.................

you shouldn't really rinse filter media during cycling, all you're doing is getting rid of any bacteria that may have developed. i've read that different danio's will shoal together, but i've also heard that that's a bit of a wives tail so i'd go for more of the same, plus it will look better IMO

What's The Purpose Of Filter Wool?

in most filters it acts as a pre-filter, collecting all the bigger particles so they don't get into all the other sponges etc. it's designed to be replaced as it gets clogged up quickly, but usually you can rinse them in old tank water a few times before they need replacing.

    Laos Biotope

here it is, all i need to do is wait for the new vallisneria gigantea to grow out, and wait for my replacement heater to arrive. i'm planning on changing the stock when i can find somewhere that can get what i'm after! edited to change pic

    Is It Important.................

danios are shoaling fish, so if its possible you should get a few more, that should make the nervous one happier to come out and be with his tank mates, and will help stop too much bullying. checking your water chem is the first thing to try though

    Trying To Find Betta's

as you might have read in a previous post, i'm after a trio of betta smaragdina, but i can't find them anywhere at the mo'. i'm also interested in betta simplex, so if anyone knows anyone that can get these, can you let me know? also, would i be able to keep a small group of each, or would the...

    Rtbs Compatability

the oto's should be fine, but ocassionally you get really funny RTBS that attack everything, so keep an eye on it when it starts to mature. the same goes with the keyholes really, it all depends on the temperament of the individual RTBS

    Blackwater

i've never tried to alter my Ph because most things wont work on a permenant basis. but i'm getting very tempted to try something like this, as long as i know i can definitely get enough so i never run out. where do you get it from? do you put it in the tank and let it do its job in there? i'd...

    Rena Smart Heater

i've had this heater less than a month (300W) and after playing around with my tank a bit yesturday it wont stop flashing. there was a lot of stuff floating about after i was done planting some plants and re-arranging a few things. ever since it's been flashing to warn the water is too warm...

    High Ph

leave it alone. anything you do to lower the Ph wont permanantly change the hardness of the water, so the Ph will start to rise again. fish don't know how hard the water is in their natural habitat because chances are they've never been there, and trying to change the hardness is a lot more...

    Name That Fish! Please

it looks like an SAE, but there is another fish that looks identical (crossocheilus oblongus) which is commonly called a siamese flying fox. they're pretty much the exact same fish though, they look the same, they're found in the same areas, and they have the same temperament. SAE's really...

    Will Sae Eat Fish Eggs....?

if you get a couple more SAE's the aggressive one might be fine. i've got 4 in my 240L and there's no aggression at all. they're a pretty typical shoaling fish so the bigger will always keep the others in check, and if there's only 2 the smaller will always get harassed. this all depends on if...

    This Is Pushing It, Right?

you've got a big tank, so keeping the 2 shouldn't be a problem. try to split the tank into different sections with tall plants and decor etc. so they can each claim a territory and have some unclaimed space inbetween. as long as there is plenty to break the line of sight they should easily be...

Opinions On Painted Glass Background For Community Tank ?

IMO black always looks good. how big is the tank? it might cost a bit to do nicely, but you could try the frosted background with back lighting a lot of planted tank fanatics are doing? i took the background off my tank a little while ago, and i think it looks great with nothing there, just a...

    Changing For Gravel To Sand

i know some people on this forum disagree with me on this, but there is a lot of bacteria in the gravel (enough to make a difference if you remove it in one go at least) so i'd follow Crystalclear 16's advice and net the gravel up and leave it in the tank. bacteria isn't free floating in the...

    Bettas Natural Environment

    Betta's + Special Requirements.

sorry, i worded that wrong, but you can get different species of betta that are naturally better coloured. ie. b. smaragdina, have a look at the males and tell me a female b. splendens looks as good as that. better still thats a natural colour, not years of inbreeding to create a certain colour...

    Complete Noob

i just thought i'd pop my head in here to say i like your name! assaye's stocking idea sounds brilliant to me for that tank. some shrimp are gorgeous and if you look around there's some beautiful rasbora's out there. if you find a fish you like but your LFS doesn't stock it, ask them if they...

    Betta's + Special Requirements.

in the wild they're pretty solitary, they live in similar areas to other anabantoids, but they don't get along particularly well. most rasboras are found in similar environments too which might be ok if you pick a mid sized species, if they're too small they might get eaten. i seriously think...

    Bettas Natural Environment

thats the problem with a lot of shop staff. i informed a manager of a pet shop that siamese algae eaters are different from flying fox after another customer asked about them, only for her to say "i don't know" then walk off. i suggest you find out as much as you can about all the fish your shop...

    Kent Anyone?

wow, i haven't checked this post since i put it up, seems there is still some life in kent! well, i'm in folkestone and i mostly use Ark in canters, or sometimes give swallow a visit. i'm a bit too particular to visit shops very often though as i'm always after something specific so i need to do...

only smaragdina, prima and splendens are found in Laos! i have thought about re-homing the P. semifasciolatus and replacing them with P. hexazona though, which would mean i could turn it into a thai biotope. but then i'd want to re-home the SAE's too as they'd be the only fish from flowing...

    Nitrate Levels In Tap Water?

the general rule for levels in tank water if there's signs in the tap water is to not let it get 20ppm above what it comes out of the tap. most fish can tolerate much higher levels of nitrate than we give them credit for, and you should only really worry about it if you plan on keeping anything...
