hi,
just a quick question, does anyone know what bettas are in demand at the moment, such as is it crown tails or double tails etc. also what colors are aswell.
any info would be helpful but please no mean comments. :)

Much of this depends on if you are looking locally, regionally, or don't mind shipping. For local or regional look into a local club, this is where you will find out information about local breeders. They also have a good idea as to other clubs in the region, and who is breeding what. This will point you in the right direction as to what is in demand locally, and what is already being sold. For people who ship fish check out a site such as Aquabid, you can tell by activity & price what is most in demand.

Hmm, not sure really. I know I'm looking for a pastel white to opaque white, halfmoon.

Ebay is a pretty good resource, have a look on there & add the nice ones to your watch list to see how much they sell for.

At my LFS, solid reds & blacks are very popular as are the marbles, crowntails seem to be very popular, halfmoons & superdeltas are pretty much always quick sellers.

The Plakats seem to be gaining popularity, but I think these would sell more to the serious hobbyist. So it depends where you will be trying to sell.

hiya!

IMO, CTs but a good amount of rays, not just normal LFS ones, Also Halfmoons will always be wanted id say. Apart from those, possibly feathertailed types etc.

Colours;- not red! (this is very dominent and most common, so try not to spawn a pair that has red in it, as all the fry might turn out red.
Black orchids are nice and rare, as are deep purples etc.

Hope that helps :)

Halfmoons normally sell for a lot.
I might be wrong, but from what I gathered.... the fry aren't always born halfmoon from halfmoon parents but superdeltas instead, and so can be sold as 'halfmoon geno' but they are not half moons so the demand isnt the same.

someone correct me if I'm wrong please :)

if you're planning on breeding to make some money you really need to think about setting it up as a proper business, and be able to ship all over the place. there might be a very low demand for betta's in general in your area, so selling them could be a problem.
if you do decide to do it as a career i'd suggest specializing in a few areas so you get better quality fish as you'd be more dedicated to them. personally i'm not a fan of fancy b. splendens, but i like the wild type, there's a few other wild type betta's that are in demand too, you wouldn't sell loads but there are people that are after them (like myself!)

yeh thats right! Its basically what genes the whole family have. Which is why its really important to know the genes of the breeding pair, the females parents and the males parents!

i think it all depends on your reason for breeding them. if you plan on making money you might have trouble, if it's as a personal project then you need to find somewhere that will take the fry. i know you've had a bit of grief off other people, and that's not my intention. its just like big_eyes said though, there's already plenty of breeders so you've got a lot of competition. betta splendens in any colour or variety are pretty common if you look hard enough. but anything rarer might be hard to sell.

Why can't people just keep fish and be happy?

I know many, many people who take extreme joy in breeding bettas, whether their intention was to sell or not. IMO it's really interesting too, and being successful in breeding is such a joy. I won't ever breed 'cause I'm personally not interested in it. But obviously, a lot of other people are! Just wanted to say~

What I'm personally looking for is darker colored bettas. I don't see them often at all, not here at least. Like black, dark purple, or anything that is dark. I think I've seen enough opaque, white, etc. etc, and they're out of my taste. But that's only MY opinion. You have a try at dragons, but I can imagine it's hard? Not a breeder, so I wouldn't know. And I like...clean-cut colors. Not a bunch of mixes, like blotches of white and color, etc. I like a clean black, and blue fins, or something similar to that (just an example). I can imagine you'll have to buy bettas off of someone else though. Halfmoons are my preferences, veiltails always will be no matter how common they are, crowntails are definitely interesting. Good luck

It's worth looking at what bettas are sold in your local fish stores. Ask them which tail types sell the fastest.

In my area, anything that isn't a veiltail or bog standard coloured (dark blueblack and purple ) PK goes like the clappers. My nearest LFS had a couple of crowntails in the other week, within days they were both reserved for the same guy. The same happened when they had 3 giant bettas in stock. I'd have had one myself were I not banned from any more tanks.

If you are not able to post or ship the fish, and local is your only source for homes, then as I say, ask around the stores you inted to give them to, and any people who seem interested.

If there are any fish clubs or auctions in your area, then go to one and ask around there for advice on what would be most desired, tell the you are interested in breeding the bettas and would like to know how well you would do in finding homes for certain tail types, what would people most be interested in ect .

If you are serious about breeding bettas I would consider a few things. Learn as much as possible so your fry don't die and will remain healthy. Make sure you know what a quality betta looks like. Your breeding pair should not just have the title of the tail type, but show it's full potential. Finnage and color are very important. Mixing two random fish together will get you no where. Also, have a breeding goal. Don't just say I'm going to breed these fish together and get fry. Have in your mind what you want to breed and achieve the goal by breeding bettas that will produce the fry you want. Genetics will come in handy for this.

Now to answer your real question. I ponder around Aquabid a lot and I see that halfmoons and halfmoon plakats are highest in demand. Their really isn't any special color. Opaques, Mustard Gas, Dragons, and Salamanders are just some of the higher selling colors.
