What's the actual purpose of filter wool.... Is it just a place for beneficial bacteria to grow? Does it pick up fine particles of debris? Oh, and where do you put it in your filter?
Thanks,
f_f!

i use filter wool to polish the water, it just depends on what filter you have to where you put it. It does need to be changed quite regular though.

Thank you. =) I have power filters, like Aquaclears and such. =) I put some filter wool in all of my 6 aquariums. (I had the wool before, I just didn't know what the exact purpose was.)

in most filters it acts as a pre-filter, collecting all the bigger particles so they don't get into all the other sponges etc. it's designed to be replaced as it gets clogged up quickly, but usually you can rinse them in old tank water a few times before they need replacing.

Wool, you might as well wash in tap water. Colt tap, full blast- cleans a lot better than rinsing in old tank water and since it's purely mechnical media it's not like you need to preserve bacterial colonies.

I use Filter Wool Alot. But I do Not Buy the Bags fromt he Aquarium, I buy it from the Department Store (Cushion Filler) Same Thing.

Agree that blasting it under cold tap cleans it very well.

Cold water blasting all the way  yes I do that as well, filter wool just collects the larger particles and gunk that goes into the filter. If the filter outlet is noticeably slower then its time to rinse/change the wool.

i use it to wrap my fish up at night to keep them nice and warm
