I'd go for lots of flow, but add some raised slate 'shelves' so that they can rest behind them. Food will accumilate there for them as well.

    Early Filter Upgrade

externals ADD to the total volume of water you have, which will make some differnece stabilising a 60l tank. I'd go with an external, depending on price difference get the ex700 and reduce the output flow with the tap. The ex600 would be fine, but theres only a couple of pounds between the 600...

How Many Neon Tetras In A 180l (over Filtered)

Loads of food for thought. Started the quest yesterday with 5 black neons and 8 yellow congo tetras. Will wait a week and get the same again and build up each week. The neons in the LFS were tiny and would have disapeared up the filter intake! gh is >6d but less than 10d kh is 3d

    Thinking Of A Pond...

HOws about making a pond with backing and liner. The money saved could be used for a pump and DIY filter (think black water tank, some plumping fittings and gravel, hair rollers etc for media). I dug out for a few preformed ponds and don't think they are worth the hassle. Pond liner lets you...

    Guppies Going Crazy!

did you use declorinator/heavy metals remover with the water change. could be clorine or metals in the water irritating them

    New Tank Up And Running

from the world of pond keeping. Length of water contact with the media is as important as flowrate. Hence bigger canisters = good! If the filter isne't big enough in terms of media then yours simply pushing water back into the tank that hasn't been touched by the bacteria. I'd be tempted to add...

How Many Neon Tetras In A 180l (over Filtered)

Yes its the schooling I like. I think a school of neons / cardinals looks fantastic. (As per how you see them at the LFS - though they are only there for a short time!) I built up the filtration to allow me to achieve this (I hope!). As it seems to be their natural behaviour, it is hopefully how...

How Many Neon Tetras In A 180l (over Filtered)

Yep. To get them to shoal would they need to be added together? If so I probably need to do some daily water changes to let the filter bacteria catch up, do you think?

How Many Neon Tetras In A 180l (over Filtered)

I also figure that within reason the different ph preferences for platties and neons for fish bred in capivity is a mute point? my current ph is just under 7.0 but not quite 6.8 :) Would cardinals be a better choice?

How Many Neon Tetras In A 180l (over Filtered)

Ok. I have a 180l juwel vision. Currently housing 8 platies and 5 apple snails. Tank is mature (4 yrs?). Over the past 12 months I've not replaced any loses as I have a thought to geting a decent shoal of neons. The tank is very overfiltered with a tetratec ex1200 (lenghtened the spaybar to...

Advise Please On Best External Filter For New Tank?

You can always turn a large filters flow down. But you can't improve a filter thats too small. The larger filters have larger media capacity (as well as larger flowrate) its the larger media capacity you are after IMHO. Yes the eheim classics are good, but most people end up going for the...

Advise Please On Best External Filter For New Tank?

kind of the opposite of above :) I'd say the ecco are good, the other eheim being overpriced for what they are. I currently have two tetratecs (one ex700 and one ex1200) which are good. I think the thermal ones are silly prices for what they give you. Ultimatly get the biggest capacity filter...

Tetratec EX or eheim IMHO. I now have two tetratecs and so far can't fault them, have 3yr guarentee also. Had a eheim for years until recently, and until I broke the handle last week had no trouble with it.

    I Think He's Dying

Is Tetratec Ex1200 Wider Then Ex700

Arghh! Broken handle on my eheim ecco. Looking at replacing possibly, looking around the ex1200 doesn't seen bad value. However I have a ex700 that just fits width wise in my cupboard. is the ex1200 wider? or just taller?

    Bi-orbs?

They look good and with the right fish they are OK. Problems are the filter is absolute crap. The top opening is small and makes cleaning a bit of a pain (esp for a bloke!). Theres not enough water to make life easy, theres little stability in the water. Agian with the right fish they are ok...

Fish R Fun In-hood Filter Pump

Not familiar with that tank. But normally you would fill to the bottom of the hood (cover), so that the top of the water is hidden. I'd expect the power intake to be 100% waterproof.

    Eheim Professional 2324

If you REALLY need/want the heater to be outside your tank then they are OK. Otherwise they are very pricy. You can get a lot of filtration for the same money if you abandon the idea of the integrated heater.

    Dirty Green Tank Help Needed

You need a simple testing kit to see what your water is like in terms of amonia, nitrite and nitrate. The tank may be clean now, but is likely to grow algea again. Weekly water changes of 20% would be a good start.

Good Lfs In West Yorkshire Anyone?

Took a trip to tingley tropicals. Not the friendliest shop in the world (nor the unfriendliest), kind of felt a little in the way. Bought some dry stuff. Fish looked good and well looked after. Not great choice for run of the mill tropicals though. Seems I'm more more spoilt than I thought at QSS!

Final Had Enough Of The Black Box

I only tyook about 1/2 the water out and worked on the top couple of blobs of adhesive. Once they were free the bottom came free very easily, so I didn't remove the fish. All I can say again is take your time, there is some chance of damaging the tank otherwise I can't really fault the eheim...
